The prank happened since Pascal was unable to make it to the New York premiere of the film on June 7, 2025. During the phone call, when Pascal answered with a curious “What do you want?”, Evans said, “You,” and Johnson chimed in with “We’re just calling to say goodnight.” In response, Pascal questioned, “I’m supposed to go to bed at 6 p.m.?” Johnson confirmed, “Yes, indeed. Goodnight.” Evans ended the call with a friendly “Sleep well, buddy. Sweet dreams.

Afterwards, Evans inquired, “Is 10 how much you’d like to be here with us?” To which Pascal responded, “Given that it’s you two, I’d go to great lengths to be with both of you.” Johnson then asked, “Do you love me more than Chris or vice versa?” Pascal replied, “It’s too challenging. It’s beyond my ability [to answer].” Evans then murmured, “I understand the truth.

The conversation happened in front of a Pascal standup at the premiere of Materialists, where both Johnson and Evans were in attendance. The movie, helmed by Celine Song from Past Lives, has Johnson playing Lucy, a matchmaker who finds herself entangled between her former lover John (Evans) and a new love interest, Harry (Pascal).

Johnson referred to the tale as “essentially a narrative of courage, but also fear.” She characterized Evans and Pascal as “compassionate and receptive” colleagues. Moreover, she mentioned that it was intriguing because “two distinct spheres were brought together, Pedro’s realm and Chris’ realm.

The trend of pulling “goodnight” pranks originated on the social media platform TikTok, with well-known figures such as Robert De Niro and Martin Scorsese participating in it.
