Why How to Train Your Dragon’s David Tennant Didn’t Return in Remake

As a gaming enthusiast who’s also a big fan of How to Train Your Dragon, I can tell you that Dean DeBlois recently shared some insights on why David Tennant isn’t featuring in the live-action remake of this beloved series. In an interview, he talked about the casting process, concerns regarding physical compatibility, and even hinted at potential future collaborations with Tennant.

Dean DeBlois on why David Tennant’s role was recast in How to Train Your Dragon

David Tennant was unable to reprise his role in the 2025 live-action adaptation of How to Train Your Dragon because the production team had specific physical requirements for the character, which didn’t match Tennant’s appearance. In the animated films, Tennant lent his voice to Spitelout, Snotlout’s father and a large, muscular Viking warrior. However, director Dean DeBlois clarified that Tennant’s physical appearance did not suit the live-action version of the character.

In conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, DeBlois expressed his regret that they didn’t provide a more substantial role for David Tennant in their animated films. Despite this, the character Spitelout, who is Snotlout’s father, was such a massive, muscular individual that DeBlois doubted Tennant would physically fit the part due to the character’s size.

In the live-action adaptation, Peter Serafinowicz takes on the role of Spitelout, while Gerard Butler reprises his character Stoick the Vast following a scheduling adjustment that presented an unforeseen chance for his return in the remake.

DeBlois stated that he wasn’t accessible when the film casting began because he had multiple projects in a row. These projects would have kept him unavailable during our shooting timeline. However, the actors’ strike of 2023 caused some changes in these projects, creating an opportunity where we could bring him on board.

DeBlois hinted at the possibility of Tennant joining a forthcoming sequel. ‘Perhaps there’s a part tailored just for him, as he’s a truly gifted performer,’ the director suggested.

John Powell, who had previously worked on the project, was once again enlisted to create the music score. As DeBlois recounted, Powell was the very first person he reached out to and eagerly accepted the offer upon realizing the project’s sentimental and innovative appeal.
