According to Malcolm, life isn’t fair, and this sentiment is echoed by Bryan Cranston, who played Malcolm in the Middle. He clarifies why Erik Per Sullivan, who portrayed the character Dewey, won’t be appearing in the show’s upcoming reboot.
As a devoted fan, I couldn’t hide my excitement when the news broke about the much-loved sitcom coming back for a four-episode special on Disney+. I, along with many others, were eagerly awaiting the return of the original cast members. But then, to my disappointment, it was made clear that Sullivan wouldn’t be reprising his role as Dewey in the revival. That leaves him as the sole main cast member not returning for the upcoming reboot. Instead, Caleb Ellsworth-Clark from Fargo will step into the shoes of Dewey this time around.
Why is Erik Per Sullivan missing from the Malcolm in the Middle reboot?
During an interview on the Fly on the Wall podcast (through GamesRadar+), Cranston, who portrayed the cherished TV dad Hal, shared that he had a discussion with Sullivan about reprising his role as Dewey. However, Sullivan turned down the offer, stating that he simply didn’t feel inclined towards acting anymore.
Wow, that’s terrific!” I replied, “Absolutely, we can’t wait to have you on board again.” He said, “I appreciate it, but I don’t feel up to it this time. Still, it sounds wonderful.” This is how Cranston put it.
The actor went on, “He’s currently attending Harvard and pursuing a master’s degree there. He’s incredibly intelligent, as evidenced by his studies at Harvard. When asked about acting, he replied, ‘Oh dear, no, I haven’t acted since I was around nine years old. So it’s not something I’m interested in anymore.’
