Despite being positively received by both fans and critics with Marvel Studios’ latest release, Thunderbolts, a recent report from Variety indicates that the movie did not yield profits for the company.
How much did Thunderbolts* make at the box office?
As a passionate moviegoer, I’ve learned from Variety’s latest report that for Thunderbolts to break even, it required approximately $425 million at the box office. Regrettably, with current earnings standing at $377 million, it seems we might be looking at a potential loss of around $50 million for this movie.
According to certain experts, the decrease in box office earnings can be attributed to several reasons. As stated by Fandango’s movie analytics director Shawn Robbins to The Hollywood Reporter, Marvel Studios no longer anticipate each film to gross $1 billion, indicating a shift in their approach.
Jeff Bock, an Exhibitor Relations analyst, commented that the movie’s short theater run might have contributed to its disappointing box office earnings.
According to Bock, it seems that these less popular comic book movies are no longer guaranteed box office hits. The short run of “Thunderbolts” in cinemas is a worrying sign, and they’re not pulling in audiences as strongly as earlier versions did.

Marvel Studios appears unfazed by the modest box office returns, given their strategy to leverage each film as a promotional tool for the broader Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The report suggests that they can recoup some of their losses later through various channels such as merchandising, streaming on Disney+, theme parks, and other means.
I recently caught Marvel Studios’ Thunderbolts on the big screen, and it was a thrill! Guided by director Jake Schreier, this action-packed movie features me as Yelena Belova, played brilliantly by Florence Pugh. My old comrade Bucky Barnes, portrayed by Sebastian Stan, reappears as Winter Soldier. Wyatt Russell takes on the role of John Walker/U.S. Agent, while Olga Kurylenko plays Antonia Dreykov/Taskmaster, and Lewis Pullman is Bob Reynolds/Sentry. Geraldine Viswanathan, Wendell Pierce, David Harbour, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus round out the star-studded cast, with John-Kamen also making an appearance. The experience was electrifying!
