End of Abyss is an intense blend of action and horror

This summer, during Summer Game Fest Play Days, I had the chance to explore End of Abyss, a game developed by Section 9 Interactive and published by Epic Games. The captivating sci-fi setting and intriguing storyline of End of Abyss drew me in right away, leaving me eager for more after my demo session.

In my gaming adventure, I find myself delving into the depths of the Abyss, taking on the role of Cel – a skilled combat technician. This sprawling, deserted underground complex, teeming with strange, aggressive creatures, both humanoid and otherwise, is my playground for now. As I venture deeper and uncover hidden sections, it becomes clear that this facility is vast.

Armed with a modifiable pistol and shotgun, I’ve got the tools to survive the encounters ahead. A convenient upgrade station within the complex allows me to enhance my weapons as needed, ensuring I’m always ready for whatever lies beneath. The journey through the Abyss begins here!

In End of Abyss, each fight carries significant impact due to the confined spaces where battles usually occur. If you’re careless, enemies can quickly close the gap. By skillfully manipulating the right analog stick for aiming and firing, while being mindful with the left one for moving around cautiously, you establish a rhythm that includes occasional dodge rolls. This results in an engaging combat experience.

As I delved into the complex, I employed a detector to scrutinize every corner. This device pointed out valuable resources ripe for plunder, as well as hidden pathways and the means to reach them. For instance, there was a wall that could be demolished with an explosion. In the demonstration, I acquired a C4-like explosive, returned later, and blew it up. Additionally, the scanner informed me about the specific key required to open various doors.

End of Abyss borrows certain elements from the Metroidvania style during its exploration phase. This means you’ll often find yourself revisiting previously explored areas as you advance and acquire new equipment. However, getting comfortable doesn’t equate to being safe, because if you die, every enemy in the compound will respawn. In certain situations, it might be wiser to simply run through an area rather than using up ammo.

Towards the culmination of my demonstration, I encountered one of the initial bosses in End of Abyss. This colossal, lumbering entity was composed of a gloopy, ooze-like material and assaulted me with merciless melee attacks. As the battle progressed, it picked up a steel beam to extend its range. By learning its attack sequences, I managed to evade and fire my way to triumph, only to learn that I was the first person to conquer the demo during Summer Games Fest Play Days on that particular day.

This sneak peek comes from an early demonstration we saw during Summer Game Fest: Play Days. Keep in mind, the finished game could still have changes.
