Moon Knight Had Different MCU Villain Until Creative Changes

In the Moon Knight TV series, it was Arthur Harrow, portrayed by Ethan Hawke, who took on the role of the main antagonist. However, as revealed by creator Jeremy Slater, this wasn’t initially planned.

Who was supposed to be Moon Knight Season 1’s villain?

As I sat down with ComicBook, I shared my initial vision for our show: I had always imagined including Bushman, one of Moon Knight’s legendary adversaries, in the series. However, when working hand-in-hand with Marvel and director Mohamed Diab, we decided to take a slightly different path instead.

Slater mentioned that Marvel opted for a different path, assembling their own group of writers instead. It’s like stepping into a massive playground where you’re momentarily using someone else’s toys, but remember they aren’t yours to keep in the end. That’s just how it is, so it wasn’t a shocking development at all.

In this new version, it’s disclosed that Bushman will embody a distinct Egyptian deity within the series. His character will have conflicts with Moon Knight, as shown in the storyline. The writer, considering Black Panther’s triumph and Michael B. Jordan’s memorable portrayal of Killmonger, felt compelled to deviate from a similar narrative choice to avoid seeming repetitive.

Slater expressed that if Marc Spector indeed became the Avatar of Khonshu, they intended to transform Bushman into an avatar of a distinct Egyptian deity for a confrontation. However, the writers eventually created a character named Harrow, who served as a disciple of Ammit instead. Slater further explained their challenge: “The obstacle we constantly encountered was that Black Panther had recently been released and Michael B. Jordan delivered an exceptional performance as Killmonger in the film. His impact was so significant that everything we wrote seemed a bit derivative.
