As a gaming enthusiast, I can’t help but feel excited about the recent success of movies like Ballerina and Lilo & Stitch at the box office. They’re creating quite a buzz in the industry with their impressive openings and longevity. Ballerina has made a strong start, even surpassing the opening of the first John Wick, but it’s failing to match the later installments in the franchise. On the other hand, Lilo & Stitch simply refuses to let go, raking in over $335 million domestically, showing no signs of slowing down.
Ballerina underperforms at box office
In its initial weekend screenings at 3,409 movie theaters within the U.S., Ballerina – the John Wick spinoff featuring Ana de Armas – raked in an impressive $25 million. On a larger scale, this dance-centric action film garnered a global debut of $51 million.

Ballerina, starring Ana de Armas as the lead in the John Wick spinoff, grossed $25 million during its first weekend at 3,409 U.S. theaters. With an international launch, it made a total debut of $51 million worldwide.
In comparison to the initial release of John Wick in 2014, which made $14.4 million, the latest installment’s opening surpasses this figure, but it doesn’t reach the earnings of later chapters: John Wick: Chapter 2 ($30.4M), Chapter 3 – Parabellum ($56.8M), and Chapter 4 ($73.8M). Lionsgate revealed that the combined total from Friday previews and regular screenings amounted to $10.65 million, decreasing by 8.2% to $8.2 million on Saturday and further dropping to $6.1 million on Sunday.
The movie had a high exit rate, receiving a 93% audience approval on Rotten Tomatoes and a “definite recommend” rating of 79% on PostTrak. The film was mainly enjoyed by men, making up 63% of the audience, with 45% being over 35 years old. It performed exceptionally well in the South Central and Western regions, particularly at AMC Burbank where it grossed $72,000. (Source: Deadline)
It’s estimated that the production costs fell within the $90 million ballpark, with about 60-70% of this covered by overseas ticket sales. Lionsgate is said to have spent approximately $45 million on advertising within the U.S. market.
Initially, it seemed like the film would earn more than $35 million upon release. However, the limited appearance of Keanu Reeves might have influenced the number of people who went to see it.
Lilo & Stitch reaches close to $800 million
In its third weekend, Disney’s Lilo & Stitch grossed a total of $32.5 million in North America, pushing its domestic earnings to an impressive $335.8 million. Globally, the film has amassed a staggering $772.6 million. The figures for the weekend were as follows: $9.3 million on Friday, $13.1 million on Saturday, and $10.1 million on Sunday, showing strong attendance across 4,185 cinemas.
The movie debuted with an impressive $146 million in late May and managed to stay popular even after a significant 47% decrease in its third weekend earnings. It joined A Minecraft Movie as the second film of 2025 to surpass $300 million domestically. As of now, Lilo & Stitch stands as Disney’s highest-earning movie of the year and is the third-highest grossing film overall in 2025. It maintained the top position for a continuous three weekends.
