Among the less expected announcements during this year’s Summer Game Fest 2025 was the reveal of Deadpool VR, where the famous antihero humorously commented on the VR platform and even referenced Insomniac’s Spider-Man series in the promotional video. I had a chance to don a Meta Quest 3 headset at Summer Game Fest Play Days and immerse myself in the snug red and black suit of Deadpool, enjoying the entertaining experience of defeating enemies as the character chattered away.
In a typical Deadpool fashion, the story wouldn’t be complete without our character exhibiting an over-the-top self-awareness, and that’s exactly what Deadpool VR offers. Wade Wilson comments on being in a video game named after himself, points out flaws in the game mechanics, and expresses gratitude to the developers – all in good fun. The humor lies in the irony as intense violence unfolds on the screen. I found Neil Patrick Harris’ portrayal of Deadpool amusing, despite it seeming like he was trying to mimic Ryan Reynolds.
Deadpool VR offers a flexible movement system, enabling you to stroll around expansive areas using the analog sticks and look around with your head. It includes jumping, wall-running, and swift actions that might cause discomfort for those particularly sensitive to VR. However, during my demo, I didn’t experience any sickness symptoms. When starting the game, you can select from three different VR comfort settings.
During my demo, the action in Deadpool VR was undeniably the highlight for me. Wade Wilson is armed with a pair of pistols and a set of twin swords that you can quickly draw from his belt or back. The joy of storming into a room and showering it with bullets, or pinning an adversary to a wall by hurling a sword at them, is hard to beat. I found myself in a rhythmic flow where I was firing my guns at enemies, throwing the spent guns back to reload them, and using my sword to parry any close combat attacks. Additionally, I had the chance to try out a submachine gun, an assault rifle, and a sniper rifle during the demo.
The virtual reality game, Deadpool VR, lives up to its billing by being extremely violent. Upon shooting and dismantling opponents, they bleed profusely. Furthermore, there are gruesome finisher moves where Deadpool crushes their heads, scattering brain matter across the floor. In a dramatic scene, my arms were severed, only to regenerate and reattach thanks to Deadpool’s healing abilities.
In a follow-up to the impressive Batman: Arkham Shadow from last year, Deadpool VR is poised to be Meta’s upcoming blockbuster superhero adaptation. Keep an eye out for further insights into the games showcased at Summer Game Fest 2025!
