Former Newsboys Singer Michael Tait’s Sexual Assault Allegations Explained

Wondering what prompted Michael Tait‘s unexpected exit from the Newsboys, just before their 2025 tour? As this well-known figure in Christian music has stepped away from the limelight, fresh accusations have emerged regarding his past. With previous collaborators sharing their perspectives and an investigation ongoing, there is uncertainty surrounding Tait’s reputation and future.

Here’s what we know about the accusations and the events that followed.

What happened to Michael Tait?

It’s been alleged that Michael Tait, a past member of the Christian rock group Newsboys and former part of DC Talk, has faced accusations of inappropriate sexual behavior and substance abuse, as per an examination conducted by The Roys Report in June 2025.

The report, compiled after speaking to more than 50 individuals over almost three years, contains accusations made by three men stating that Tait was involved in grooming and inappropriate interactions with them from 2004 to 2014.

As a gamer, I’m recounting an incident from my past. At the time, I was 22 years old, and I found myself in a troubling situation involving someone named Tait. He allegedly behaved inappropriately towards me on multiple occasions.

For instance, he once offered me alcohol and later, when I was incapacitated, he touched me in an uncomfortable manner. Another time, we were skinny-dipping together, and he started massaging me, eventually crossing a boundary by touching me in my private area. There was also an incident on a tour bus where he offered me cocaine and then touched me without my consent.

These incidents, as I recall them, seem to share a similar pattern of inappropriate behavior.

59-year-old Tait found popularity in the 1990s through DC Talk and then joined Newsboys in 2009. In January 2025, he announced his departure from the band, explaining it in a public statement as a difficult decision that even surprised him: “This choice was not made lightly.” Newsboys remade their new single “How Many Times” with Adam Agee, who took over for Tait, with Agee mentioning that Tait planned to concentrate on his own well-being.

On June 5th, Newsboys addressed the accusations through a social media post: “Yesterday, we were deeply saddened to learn about the allegations against our former lead singer, Michael Tait, concerning drug abuse and inappropriate behavior. The band confirmed that Tait confessed to living a secretive lifestyle upon his resignation and invited any victims to speak up.

Tait hasn’t spoken out about the allegations in public settings yet. The band’s legal representative chose not to elaborate more, explaining that it wouldn’t be suitable for the Newsboys to make guesses or comments on the matter.
