Superman: James Gunn Explains How Metahumans Are Different From Mutants

In a chat on Threads, James Gunn, director of Superman, clarified the characteristics of a metahuman in the DC Universe. He responded to fans by providing a comprehensive definition that encompasses both extraterrestrial backgrounds and technologically-enhanced beings. This explanation is significant as DC Studios prepares the groundwork for its upcoming cinematic universe, with Superman set to hit theaters in July.

James Gunn on what metahumans are in Superman and DC Universe

In the world of DC Comics, a metahuman refers to an individual who possesses extraordinary abilities that are typically beyond normal human capabilities. These powers can stem from various origins such as science, magic, extraterrestrial influences, mutations, divine intervention, skill development, or technology. Although Robot #4 may not be considered a metahuman, characters like Mr. Terrific arguably fit the description. Even Krypto, Superman’s dog, possesses these extraordinary abilities and could be classified as meta, but James Gunn cautiously avoided labeling him as non-human in case he might read this comment.

In the context of the upcoming movie, Gunn referred to “our super-powered characters” when revealing character posters recently. This group includes Hawkgirl, Mr. Terrific, and Krypto among others. According to him, these individuals possess abilities that can be acquired through training, intelligence, or technology, rather than only those who have innate powers or mutations.

Unlike Marvel’s mutants, who acquire their powers through genetic mutations (often during puberty), resulting from the X-gene, this does not involve a separate subspecies of humans. Instead, individuals in question are typically relying solely on their tools or abilities they’ve honed over time.

Gunn’s addition of “expertise” as a condition expands the category of metahumans. People who possess remarkable abilities, such as Batman or Peacemaker, might meet this criteria. Unlike Marvel’s rigid mutant definition, it appears that the DC Universe takes a more adaptable approach in categorizing superpowers.

In this production, David Corenswet takes on the role of Clark Kent (Superman), while Rachel Brosnahan portrays Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult steps into the shoes of Lex Luthor. The ensemble also features Edi Gathegi, Nathan Fillion, Isabela Merced, and Milly Alcock. Wendell Pierce and Frank Grillo join in with supporting roles.

Superman releases in theaters on July 11, 2025.
