My initial encounter as the Nightreign’s Executor in Elden Ring didn’t go smoothly. This character isn’t one of the easier options, with a non-sprintable katana and an ability to transform into a wereweasel that doesn’t always work effectively. Coming from simpler characters, transitioning to the agile Nightreign ronin was quite a shock. I’d unsheathe my cursed sword, preparing for a duel with a wicked knight, but would often get hit by an enemy’s attack from behind. My transformation into the water vole king would make me a conspicuous target instead of helping me evade danger.
Initially, everything seemed to be going terribly wrong, and I was about to leave this ultra-edgy individual behind. But just as I was struggling to block a heap of slime with disastrous consequences, someone passed by and casually remarked, ” Looks like you’re playing Sekiro, huh?
Yes, it is
In that instant, a lightbulb went off. On some level, I’d always grasped that the Executor was a tribute to FromSoft’s samurai game, and similarly, the Elden Ring Nightreign Duchess class seemed to echo Bloodborne. However, it wasn’t just about appearances. I began to shift my perspective: Stop treating this like Nightreign. Abandon the aggressive approach, stop trying to outmaneuver your opponents. Instead, try to emulate Sekiro. Focus on countering, dodging, and especially parrying. Give particular importance to that last one.
Initially unsure due to my lack of experience, I was propelled by skilled colleagues towards the game’s climactic battle against a villain resembling a slasher movie antagonist and an astronomical occurrence. As his blades fractured reality around me and fear loomed, I held my ground and persisted with my previous strategy: deflecting attacks. Given that this method typically resolved problems in Sekiro, I thought it might work here as well… Correct?
However, the final boss of Nightreign possesses a move that seems almost unbelievable: he splits the very fabric of the universe in two. It’s not an exaggeration by much – the sky splits open as if a dark entity from the fifth dimension had burst through, a sight beyond human understanding, and an overwhelming surge of raw cosmic energy emanating from the gaping chasm, obliterating everything in its path like a cataclysmic explosion. But then, I managed to parry it.
Initially, I found it hard to accept, but it seemed I’d managed to divert a crumbling star with just a casual gesture as my comrades were sent soaring away. However, it did happen, it proved successful, and from that moment on, I had to reconsider the seemingly insignificant member of the Nightfarers.
Although the Executor may not be flawless or the superior Nightreign class, I encourage those who initially weren’t fond of him to reconsider. Despite some bosses seemingly ignoring his unique mechanics, there’s a distinctly different gameplay experience hidden within his Cursed Blade skill, and let’s not forget the chaotic fun of transforming into a monstrous kaiju when hordes of enemies seem unmanageable.
Most significantly, it’s noteworthy that FromSoftware is introducing fresh gaming mechanics with their upcoming Nightfarers, rather than merely resurrecting familiar builds from Elden Ring. As new characters are introduced through DLC, I eagerly anticipate the studio taking risks and incorporating something exciting, such as a playable mech reminiscent of Armored Core, for a truly immersive experience in the Lands Between.
In simpler terms, it doesn’t seem logical, but just as surprising were the appearances of the Duke, Freya, and the Nameless King. At times, we need to prioritize amusement over reason. How else could one possibly devise a way to counteract a supernova?
