“Game of Thrones” Star Liam Cunningham Sails To Gaza With Greta Thunberg

Environmental advocate Greta Thunberg and actor Liam Cunningham are embarking on a risky expedition alongside a worldwide team of human rights advocates. Their objective is to nonviolently breach the Israeli blockade surrounding Gaza while highlighting the severe humanitarian predicament in that region.

Mission Launch: Departure From Catania

On the 1st of June, 2025, I boarded the sailboat named Madleen at Catania’s port in Sicily, embarking on a mission with a noble purpose: delivering humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip. Twelve passionate activists, among them Swedish climate champion Greta Thunberg and Irish actor Liam Cunningham, famous for his role in Game of Thrones, joined me on this journey. This initiative is led by the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, a group advocating for an end to the blockade imposed by Israel on Gaza.

What’s Being Delivered

Aboard, you’ll find essential supplies such as baby formula, medical aid, water purification kits, flour, diapers, hygiene items, and prosthetics for injured children. Although this shipment is relatively small, its purpose transcends quantitative measures. It serves as a powerful symbol of compassion, demonstrating that there are individuals who choose not to ignore the plight of others and are ready to offer tangible assistance, even in the face of potential political hazards.

Famous Voices Against the Silence

Greta Thunberg underscored the significance of not staying quiet during difficult periods as the Madleen prepared to depart. In her words, “If we give up, we forfeit our humanness.” The outspoken 22-year-old climate advocate has been vocal about Gaza in recent times and has participated in numerous demonstrations supporting Palestinians.

Liam Cunningham, best recognized for his role in Game of Thrones and his sea-faring character, has been vocal about Palestine for quite some time now. Before embarking, he stated, “I’m not fearful of death. My conscience compels me to act.” For him, simply looking on as innocent people endure suffering is not an alternative. In his view, the Israeli blockade denies civilians the opportunity to live a normal life.

The voyage carries some degree of danger, as a similar vessel belonging to the same company suffered damage in a drone attack not long ago. Activists believe this incident might have been a deliberate attack, although no formal confirmation has been made yet. To ensure safety, the Madleen is under constant surveillance. This mission receives backing from organizations like Forensic Architecture, which specializes in visually examining significant events. Upon setting sail, the ship was repeatedly followed by drones.

Political Reactions And Criticism

The voyage towards Gaza has garnered worldwide focus. While numerous individuals have lauded the activists’ endeavors, there has also been severe critique, predominantly from the United States. US Senator Lindsey Graham voiced a skeptical comment, suggesting that Greta and her associates are meddling in matters beyond their comprehension. On platform X, he penned, “I hope Greta and her companions can swim!”, a remark many perceived as an explicit warning. Nevertheless, the organizers continue to uphold their non-violent stance, asserting that their objective aligns with international legal standards.

This mission transcends merely delivering modest relief items. It embodies solidarity, makes a powerful political statement, and encourages the global community to respond urgently.
