Edmund White dead at 85, claims report

Renowned American writer Edmund White, known for reshaping the landscape of gay literature, passed away at the age of 85. As reported by his representative Bill Clegg, White succumbed to complications from a stomach ailment on Tuesday night, while awaiting an ambulance.

Starting from the 1970s, White emerged as a prominent figure in LGBTQ+ literature. He gained significant recognition for his 1982 novel “A Boy’s Own Story,” which mirrored his personal journey of growing up gay during mid-20th century America. This book was the first installment in a semi-autobiographical series that also includes “The Beautiful Room Is Empty” and “The Farewell Symphony.

Born in Ohio in 1940 and raised in Illinois, White initially planned to attend Harvard but chose the University of Michigan so he could stay close to a therapist who claimed he could “cure” homosexuality.
