Inquisitive fans have been pondering over a burning query regarding Supermassive Games’ forthcoming title, Little Nightmares III. This latest installment in our beloved horror puzzle-platformer series has sparked speculation: Is Little Nightmares 3 a sequel or prequel to its predecessors? The question on everyone’s lips is: Where does it slot into the chronology?
Let’s dive into what we know so far.
Where Does Little Nightmares 3 Fit In The Timeline?
It’s not a prequel. It’s not a sequel. It’s… something else.
In contrast to how one might expect, Little Nightmares 3 doesn’t follow directly on from the events of Six or Mono. Instead, it carves its own path within the same dark universe – you could think of it as a separate horror tale set in the same world. Consider it more like an independent sequel that delves further into the nightmarish realm we call “The Nowhere.
The Little Nightmares Timeline (So Far)
Before LN3, here’s the order most fans agree on:
- Very Little Nightmares: A mobile prequel starring the Girl in the Yellow Raincoat (not Six!)
- Little Nightmares II: Follows Mono and Six before the events of the original game
- Little Nightmares (1): The classic. Six and the Maw.
- Secrets of the Maw (DLC): Runs alongside LN1, but shows the story of the Runaway Kid
So Where Does Little Nightmares 3 Fit?
In essence: Low and Alone, two fresh characters, are thrust into an unfamiliar and frightening location, The Spiral, which is a previously unseen area within The Nowhere, as presented in LN3.
Here’s what we know so far:
- It’s standalone: You don’t need to know Six or Mono to get what’s going on.
- Same world, new nightmares: The Nowhere is massive and creepy, and this is just another part of it.
- Timeline? Who knows: Time doesn’t really work normally in this universe. Things could be happening before, after, or beside each other.
Lore Connections (But No Direct Continuation)
Despite being a fresh tale, it still carries that familiar Little Nightmares ambiance: unsettling creatures, bizarre settings, and childhood anxieties brought to life. If you’ve tuned into the companion podcast, Sounds of Nightmares, you’ll pick up on additional subtle links between the stories.
Why The Change?
Originally responsible for developing the series, Tarsier Studios chose to part ways with it following Little Nightmares 2 (It’s also worth noting that Tarsier is currently working on “Reanimal”, which shares some similarities with Little Nightmares, and they plan to release it around the same time).
Moving forward to Little Nightmares 3! Notably, Supermassive Games (known for creating Until Dawn) have taken charge now. They’re preserving the ominous and eerie atmosphere while infusing it with their unique touch. Expect new characters, novel terrors, yet maintaining the familiar ambiance.
In essence, Little Nightmares 3 isn’t necessarily a continuation of the storyline from Six or Mono. Instead, it offers a new narrative that takes place within the same universe, shedding more light on the mysteries of The Nowhere.
Of course, there are no guarantees, but we’ll just have to keep our fingers crossed and patiently wait for the release of the game sometime this year.
