Animal Friends Release Date Delayed for Ryan Reynolds & Jason Momoa Movie

The launch of the upcoming live-action road trip adventure movie titled “Animal Friends,” starring Ryan Reynolds and Jason Momoa, has been pushed back by several months. Produced by A Legendary, Maximum Effort, and Prime Focus Studios, this project was initially set to be released through Sony Pictures, but due to a deal with Legendary, it will now be distributed by Warner Bros. instead.

Ryan Reynolds-Led Animal Friends finds new 2026 release date

The movie “Animal Friends” is set to hit US theaters on May 1, 2026, which is approximately seven months later than its initial release date announced earlier, October 10, 2025. Alongside Ryan Reynolds and Jason Momoa, the star-studded cast of “Animal Friends” also features Aubrey Plaza, Addison Rae, Dan Levy, Lil Rel Howery, and Ellie Bamber. The film is directed by Peter Atencio from a script written by Kevin Burrows and Matt Mider.

It’s worth noting that Animal Friends has faced a shift in its release date before. Originally, Sony Pictures planned to launch it on August 15, 2025. But later, Warner Bros. took over the distribution and moved the release to October 10 instead.

Back in April 2023, Animal Friends was referred to as a “bump-rated journey along the highways.” The production for this film kicked off in June 2023 and wrapped up around April 2024.

Significantly, Maximum Effort is a production company that Ryan Reynolds helped establish. Some of the films they have produced are Deadpool 2 (released in 2018), Free Guy (2021), Shotgun Wedding (2022), and an upcoming Deadpool & Wolverine film (scheduled for 2024). On the other hand, both filmmaker and producer Namit Malhotra established Prime Focus Media. Their future projects include Ramayana, starring Ranbir Kapoor, and The Angry Birds Movie 3.

In the role of producing animation and visual effects, DNEG – renowned for their contributions to Nimona (2023) and Dune: Part Two (2024) – has been entrusted with bringing Animal Friends to life on screen.

Previously, Peter Atencio has been in charge of action-comedy films such as Keanu (released in 2016) and The Machine (premiered in 2023). On the other hand, Burrows and Mider have been responsible for creating the animated series Gentlemen Lobsters, an original production by GQ. They were also joint authors of the teen comedy The Package, which came out in 2018.
