Is Rajinikanth and Mani Ratnam reunion on cards? Here’s what Thug Life director has to say

Previously, Rajinikanth and director Mani Ratnam joined forces to create the legendary movie “Thalapathi,” which hit screens back in 1991. Now, Ratnam himself has given us some tantalizing insights about potential future collaborations between these two powerhouses of Tamil cinema.

In an interview with News18, the director expressed that it would be best to ask actor Rajinikanth about his future projects as he has four script ideas, but they are not fully developed at this time. He mentioned that if these ideas don’t pan out, then that will likely be the end of them. After completing “Thug Life,” he plans to take a well-deserved break.

For those not familiar, this renowned director and celebrated actor had collaborated earlier on a film titled “Thalapathi.” This production was inspired by the Hindu epic, the Mahabharata, and focused on the unique bond between characters analogous to Karna and Duryodhana. The storyline revolves around Surya, a kind-hearted orphan residing in the slums, who is well-known for his generosity.

Following a skirmish with a thug, he encounters a powerful gangster named Deva, and later they forge a friendship. As events begin to fall under the shared leadership of Surya and Deva, circumstances shift dramatically when an upright district administrator enters the picture; interestingly enough, this official is also related to Surya.

From that point forward in this tale, I, an ardent fan, found myself completely engrossed as Surya embarked on a profound journey to rediscover his heritage. Simultaneously, his remarkable bond with Deva unfolded, adding layers of intrigue to the narrative. Interestingly, alongside the superstar, Mammootty and Arvind Swamy graced the screen, each playing pivotal roles in this captivating drama.

In relation to Mani Ratnam’s upcoming project, the filmmaker is set to debut on the big screen with a movie featuring Kamal Haasan and Silambarasan TR, titled “Thug Life”. This gangster action film revolves around Rangaraaya Sakthivel Naicker, an elderly gangster with Yakuza-like connections, who has brought up his foster son, Amaran, to assume his position in the criminal underworld.

Yet, if it appears that Sakthivel has perished, all doubts point towards his adopted son. Nevertheless, fueled by revenge, he unexpectedly resurfaces, determined to finally resolve the unfinished business at hand.

In addition to Haasan and STR, the movie features prominent performances by Trisha Krishnan, Abhirami, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Ashok Selvan, Joju George, among others.

Haasan and STR are not the only notable actors in this film; it also includes Trisha Krishnan, Abhirami, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Ashok Selvan, Joju George, and several others in significant roles.

Conversely, moviegoers can expect Rajinikanth to make a cinematic comeback on August 14, 2025, in the film “Coolie,” directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj.
