James Gunn Wanted Superman to Be Like Godzilla Minus One

James Gunn has shared that his upcoming Superman film draws inspiration from the concept of “Godzilla Minus One“. This innovative project by Gunn, slated for a global release on July 11, 2025, boasts an impressive cast led by David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult, and Isabela Merced. The movie marks the start of DC’s new storyline, “Gods and Monsters”, with several other talented actors also joining the roster.

Godzilla Minus One inspired James Gunn’s Superman in a big way

In a conversation with the Japanese media outlet CinemaToday, filmmaker James Gunn discussed his inspiration for Superman’s depiction. He explained that he aimed to replicate the special effects style of Godzilla, minus one, in the portrayal of Superman.

He mentioned that he was inspired by visual effects, combining titans such as colossal monsters, robots, aerial canines, additional superheroes. In the trailer for Superman’s film, Gunn displayed the Kaiju beast set to appear in the movie and engage in combat with Superman.

As a gamer, I’d rephrase it like this: In my vision for Superman, I aimed to infuse a human-like quality, much like they did with Godzilla. I wanted to create a film that was not just about Superman, but also had deep, compelling human narratives – think of it as Godzilla, but with one less monster and more people’s stories. The human element is the core here.

Additionally, Gunn discussed his unique perspective on depicting Superman in film. Unlike previous representations, Gunn emphasized showcasing Superman as a character filled with goodness, kindness, empathy, and a strong appreciation for human life.

Additionally, he mentioned, “My character embodies optimism and hope, much like Superman. Yet, the environment he inhabits has lost some of the significance of those qualities compared to the past. There’s a certain resemblance between his world and our own reality.

2023 saw me immersed in the stunning spectacle that was “Godzilla Minus One,” a film that left countless viewers in awe. Not only did it sweep the Oscars, taking home the prestigious award for Best Visual Effects, but it also solidified its place as one of the year’s most remarkable cinematic experiences.
