Brenkus died on May 31, 2025, at the age of 54 years old.

The news of John Brenkus’ passing was shared via social media. “With deep regret, we inform you that John Brenkus has tragically passed away,” the message stated. It’s been reported that John Brenkus, co-founder of BASE Productions, founder of Brinx.TV and creator and host of the six-time Emmy Award-winning ‘Sport Science,’ had been dealing with depression. Unfortunately, he lost his life to this illness on May 31st, 2025. At this difficult time, his grieving family and friends ask for privacy, and they urge anyone who may be struggling with depression to reach out for help.

Back in June 2023, during an open chat with Marcellus Wiley, I shared my personal journey that’s not often discussed – my battles with depression and a harrowing attempt at suicide. Living in a chilly mountain town after selling Sports Science to ESPN, I found myself grappling with despair and thoughts of ending it all. On one fateful day, I was inches away from following through, but my faithful canine companion intervened, giving me another chance at life. In the depths of my despair, I summoned the courage to reach out to my mom, confessing that I wasn’t okay. I embarked on a tough fight against depression, visiting numerous psychologists and therapists before finding someone whose approach resonated with me and helped guide me through the darkness.

1) For its first two seasons, Sports Science was broadcast on FSN, while the third season aired on ESPN. Since then, ESPN hasn’t shown any fresh episodes; instead, they’ve been airing Sports Science vignettes within their various programs.
