Vanessa Kirby is teasing Franklin Richards’ superpowers in The Fantastic Four: First Steps.
As a thrilled fan, I’m excited to share that this summer, starting in U.S. theaters, we’ll be taking our first steps with The Fantastic Four! Guided by the brilliant direction of Matt Shakman, the Marvel Cinematic Universe brings the iconic characters to life. In this adventure, Kirby takes on the role of Sue Storm/Invisible Woman, Pedro Pascal becomes Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic, Joseph Quinn ignites as Johnny Storm/Human Torch, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach transforms into Ben Grimm/The Thing. Can’t wait to join them on this incredible journey!
The trailers for Marvel Studios’ film The Fantastic Four: First Steps hint at Sue being with child. In the Marvel Comics, Reed and Sue are parents to Franklin and Valeria Richards, but it was previously uncertain whether these characters would make an appearance in First Steps or if they will debut in future Avengers films instead.
What did Vanessa Kirby say about Franklin Richards in The Fantastic Four: First Steps?
In a conversation with Empire Magazine, Kirby subtly suggested that “even the grown-ups aren’t the only ones who possess superpowers” in The Fantastic Four: First Steps.
In the Secret Wars comics published by Jonathan Hickman and Esad Ribić from 2015-16, Franklin plays a significant part. Towards the series’ end, he employs his powers to reconstruct the Marvel multiverse, a fact that Jack Kirby’s comment implies could be a potential direction for the MCU in future Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars storylines.
Kirby additionally shared with Empire Magazine that during the filming of The Fantastic Four: First Steps, she surpassed everyone in terms of nerdiness due to her deep interest in quantum physics. She admitted, “I became far too engrossed. I could discuss for hours about cellular vibration frequencies.
In addition to the main cast, the film features Ralph Ineson portraying Galactus, Julia Garner taking on dual roles as Shalla-Bal and Silver Surfer. Paul Walter Hauser, John Malkovich, and Natasha Lyonne are also part of the ensemble, though their specific roles remain undisclosed.
The Fantastic Four: First Steps will be released in United States theaters on July 25, 2025.
