How to complete the Shifting Earth: The Crater event in Elden Ring Nightreign

Venturing through Elden Ring Nightreign’s enigmatic Crater event is no walk in the park, but the prize at the end makes it all worthwhile. Should you brave the ominous volcano that looms in the northern expanse of Limveld, you’ll uncover a rare Smithing Table – a secret forge capable of elevating any weapon into the realm of legend.

In Elden Ring, named legendary weapons can be claimed from defeated bosses, but crafting your own unique legendary weapon is the only option available. Therefore, it’s quite valuable depending on the Nightlord you encounter. It’s important to mention that the Shifting Earth: The Crater event will only persist for a few playthroughs, whether you win or lose, so if you aim to finish it and earn the achievement, it’s best to visit there as soon as possible.

After each cycle of the four Shifting Earth events, which then become unpredictable, there will be a significant wait before this specific event occurs again. However, given that it’s the first time for everyone, you’re likely to encounter other players who also have the event active on the map initially, even after it ends for you. To complete the Shifting Earth: The Crater event, locate the Special Smithing Table and craft a legendary weapon.

Elden Ring Nightreign Special Smithing Table location

When the Shifting Earth: The Crater event starts, as indicated in the pop-up message, you should look for an “ancient temple dedicated to the smithing crafts.” Essentially, you are searching for a Special Smithing Table, a unique location where any weapon can be transformed into legendary ones. Although this table is referenced in the Nightreign visual codex within the Roundtable Hold, it’s not explicitly stated that this table serves as the end objective of The Crater event.

Exploring the crater can be quite challenging, so I suggest you do that on the second day of your expedition. This is because the location for the night two boss often appears to the north of the crater when active on the map, which means you’ll be near it once you’ve finished.

To complete the Shifting Earth: The Crater event, follow these steps:

  1. Drop down into the crater—though not into the lava at the very bottom as this is instant death—and descend around its circumference
  2. You’ll eventually come to face a Fire Prelate enemy—ignore him and drop through the hole he’s standing in front of
  3. Continue along the lower walkway, past the group of patrolling Thorn Sorcerers with flaming staves, before turning left to spy a golden fog door guarded by two Fire Monks and a Fire Prelate
  4. Defeat the Fire Prelates boss, go through the door, turn right and run down the descending corridor with the Flame Chariots, before turning right again back out onto the walkway
  5. Continue along, avoiding the Finger Creeper enemies, until you find a broken section of the walkway that descends into a little crater
  6. Drop off the bottom of this onto the pillar below and keep dropping down until you reach the Special Smithing Table altar—be very careful here not to drop into the lava and die
  7. Defeat the Magma Wyrm that appears in front of the altar

Perform those actions, and you’ll be prepared to engage with the Unique Smithing Station, finish the event, and potentially earn an accomplishment for doing so.

How to forge a legendary weapon in Elden Ring Nightreign

Engaging the Specific Forge will present an opportunity for you to enhance one weapon from your stockpile. The weapon’s rarity doesn’t matter, but remember that each character can upgrade only once during an expedition. This way, each member of your team has a chance at acquiring a legendary item.

As a gamer, having the Relic that adjusts my starting weapon’s damage type opens up an awesome opportunity. This allows me to ensure I obtain a legendary weapon tailored to the Nightlord’s vulnerability, considering I can enhance my initial weapon should I so desire.

After completion, utilize the spectral hawk tree located near the lava’s edge as an exit route, avoiding a grueling and seemingly insurmountable climb back up.
