Actor Benicio del Toro has expressed his opinions about potentially reprising his role as The Collector in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday. Del Toro initially appeared as The Collector in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) back in 2013’s Thor: The Dark World. However, since Avengers: Infinity War in 2018, The Collector has not made an appearance in any other Marvel films.
Benicio del Toro says he hasn’t been invited for Avengers: Doomsday
Recently, Benicio del Toro had a chat with ComicBook for the promotion of “The Phoenician Scheme”. During this conversation, he discussed the possibility of The Collector’s part in “Avengers: Doomsday”.
Reporter questioned Benicio del Toro if he planned to be part of the upcoming Avengers film cast. In response, he voiced doubts about The Collector’s role within the Marvel Cinematic Universe and said, “I’m not certain. It’s like, you need an invitation to participate in a global sports event, and I’d really enjoy participating, but I hope it happens soon. I haven’t received an invitation for the second round yet.
In the movie Avengers: Infinity War, The Collector, also known as Taneleer Tivan, made his last screen appearance when Thanos visited Knowhere to get the Reality Stone. During this encounter, Thanos tricked the Guardians of the Galaxy using an illusion, and it was in this deception that we saw The Collector. It’s unclear whether he perished at the hands of Thanos or managed to survive the events on Knowhere.
In the year 2018, Benicio del Toro hinted that The Collector might still be alive following Infinity War. He stated, “I believe he’s alive…I think so…You’re speaking with him!” as reported by CinemaBlend.
In November 2022, James Gunn, director of Guardians of the Galaxy, subtly suggested that The Collector might still be alive. During an interview with Entertainment Tonight about the Guardians’ new home base in the GOTG Holiday Special, Gunn mentioned, “They’ve purchased Knowhere from The Collector; it’s now their home base.
Avengers: Doomsday will come out on December 18, 2026.
