Lately, Nick Kroll shared insights into the tough ordeal he went through in assisting John Mulaney with a drug intervention amidst the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. In a conversation on Dax Shepard’s Armchair Expert podcast, Kroll confided that period was filled with intense emotions and challenges. He described the process as “extremely taxing,” given the added complications of the pandemic regulations, his wife being pregnant at the time, and his own professional commitments.

Kroll expressed profound concern for Mulaney’s wellbeing, remembering emotional late-night conversations where they both cried. The comedian described Mulaney as being recklessly active in New York City, and he was extremely worried that Mulaney might not survive. Although he empathized with Mulaney’s hardships, Kroll confessed to feeling a great deal of anger as well. After an intervention, Mulaney sought treatment in rehab.

Kroll talked about how he reacted to Mulaney’s comedy material after rehab. He confessed that he felt uncomfortable with the way the intervention was depicted onstage. He told Mulaney that it didn’t sit well with him initially, but Mulaney was open to the feedback. Kroll clarified that he respected Mulaney’s decision to share his experiences through stand-up comedy. He stated, “Everyone’s approach and art are unique. That which he decides to reveal is what makes him so incredibly funny, captivating, and addictive as a performer.

Previously, Mulaney mentioned in various interviews the individuals who facilitated his entry into rehab. Later, in a conversation with Jimmy Kimmel in 2023, he disclosed that he initially didn’t perceive it as an intervention; instead, he believed he was just going out for dinner with two friends. In 2024, he disclosed further that his spouse, Olivia Munn, also played a part in smaller interventions when they learned she was pregnant.
