In the ’90s, the Gex video game series might not have been widely recognized by many gamers. However, this trilogy was among the early creations of Crystal Dynamics, a studio that later gained fame in the gaming world. The games revolve around a wisecracking gecko named Gex who journeys through various media dimensions.
If you’re among those who haven’t experienced Gex’s mischief, Limited Run Games kept the character alive for future adventures. During PAX East 2025, I had a chance to play the game myself and explore the updated versions of the three games that have been re-created.
The remake, due out on June 16, 2025, is another example of Limited Run’s skill at resurrecting classic games. It maintains many of the original game’s endearing qualities, yet infuses numerous contemporary enhancements to boost the gaming experience.
Instead of labeling the updated trilogy as a straight-up remake, it might be more accurate to categorize it as an upgraded version of the original games. Similar to Limited Run Games’ approach with other remakes, the Gex Trilogy comes with a range of new enhancements that greatly improve the gaming experience. Key features include rewind functionality, save states, and most crucially, analog controls.
This older game, Gex from 1995, may not seem impressive at first glance due to being a classic, side-scrolling platformer. However, Limited Run Games has given it an enhancement in graphics, making the colors and textures quite appealing, particularly on devices like the Steam Deck OLED. I spent most of my playtime testing it on this device.
In the sequels Gex: Enter the Gecko (1998) and Gex 3: Deep Cover Gecko (1999), incorporating analog controls has been a truly transformative element. Just like many revamped ’90s games, employing contemporary control methods significantly enhances the overall experience. Additionally, the flexibility to save at any point and rewind if an in-game annoyance occurs aligns with Limited Run Games’ goal of modernizing the games while preserving their original allure.
Gex finds the appeal primarily in its charm. The game’s humor and distinctive style remain evident, yet enhanced slightly with some improved visuals. Regardless of whether it’s played on a console and TV or a handheld device, the Gex Trilogy appears visually impressive, demonstrating Limited Run’s dedication to their projects.
Beyond just the actual games, the Gex Trilogy offers additional elements similar to other enhanced retro titles. This collection includes a museum section dedicated to showcasing key moments from Gex’s past, and even features an exclusive interview with Dana Gould, the voice actor who brought the character to life in the original series.
Although it appears unlikely that a new Gex game will be released these days, followers of the series can anticipate an exciting prospect with Limited Run’s launch. The trilogy is modernized with some fresh updates, yet remains true to itself by allowing each game to stand out independently.
The Gex Trilogy is scheduled for launch on June 16, 2025, and can be played on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and personal computers. Preorders for the physical versions of the game are currently available on Limited Run Games’ website.
