Characters in video games vary greatly, encompassing everything from robust warriors to compelling underdogs. The protagonist of To a T belongs to the latter group, yet this particular character stands out as an inspiration due to his distinctive traits. Annapurna Interactive and Uvula (the studio founded by Keita Takahashi, creator of Katamari Damacy) narrate a tale about an individual born into an unusual circumstance. This person’s situation serves to educate players of all ages on some profound life lessons.
To the letter
The protagonist of To a T is enjoying his 13th birthday, an achievement in itself given that he was born with a condition which means he must always maintain a permanent T-shaped stance due to his disability. This aspect of the character resonates humorously with those involved in video game development or enthusiasts, as most modern characters are initially designed and tested in a T-pose position. In fact, it’s often the job of QA testers to ensure that characters do not appear in this pose during gameplay. Thus, having a character who is perpetually in such a state adds an amusing twist to the storyline.
In essence, the game symbolically portrays the daily struggles faced by numerous children with disabilities in a relatable manner. Though physically being in a T-pose doesn’t exist in reality, it serves as a representation within the game. Players aid this character in activities such as dressing up, eating cereal, brushing teeth, walking to school, and completing other tasks that might seem ordinary for most people, but are quite challenging for him. As you progress, it becomes evident that this character’s difficulties could mirror those of a person suffering from muscular dystrophy, cerebral palsy, or any other condition that makes everyday living difficult.
The narrative primarily focuses on experiencing a typical week in this teenager’s life, but as events veer from the ordinary, particularly when he starts having visions of an impending catastrophe and considers harnessing his peculiar ability to soar through skies. Despite moments of dreamy speculation about the future and brief flights of imagination, To a T remains fundamentally rooted in reality, tugging at your heartstrings from the get-go.
Also, there’s a giraffe
The unique qualities of “To a T” primarily lie in its compelling narrative and uplifting protagonist. What stands out most is the careful handling of the character’s condition, ensuring it’s not used for ridicule. There may be humor, but it arises from the predicaments the child finds himself in, rather than his disability or its symptoms. Furthermore, the main character feels incredibly relatable due to his human qualities. He experiences tough days, stemming from academic struggles and occasional bullying, which resonate with many viewers. Despite these hardships, he greets each day with infectious optimism, striving to lead a fulfilling life despite his physical limitations.
In this narrative, the atmosphere echoes that of a PBS kids program, filled with dialogue that breaks the conventional rules of storytelling, a lively children’s choir, and catchy tunes. A towering, anthropomorphic giraffe named Giraffe dishes out sandwiches and offers uplifting advice, similar to Sesame Street’s Big Bird in his own unique world. Each episode features an introductory sequence and closing theme song, adding a delightful touch… initially. However, after hearing the same opening tune and Giraffe song multiple times (around the third or fourth time), its appeal begins to diminish slightly.
Discussing repetitive tasks that may lose their appeal, there’s enjoyment in assisting the protagonist with his daily morning rituals. Typically, gamers aid him in performing various tasks such as getting dressed, using the restroom, rushing downstairs to wash his face, eating breakfast, brushing his teeth, putting on shoes, and hurrying out the door to collect lunch from Giraffe’s sandwich shop. There’s a certain appeal in this recurring sequence, particularly when the mother encourages the character to perform these tasks independently as part of his growth journey. This gesture adds warmth, and it forms an essential aspect of the protagonist’s narrative, demonstrating his determination to live a typical life despite his condition. His ability to function normally and seize every opportunity to do so is heartening. However, it can become monotonous to perform the same tasks repeatedly.
Luckily, each episode offers a range of humorous scenarios, such as performing science experiments, attempting to learn how to fly, or competing against a train in a race. Although To T’s story generally stays realistic, some instances delve into the exaggerated and prove beneficial. Episodes move along swiftly and usually finish within 30 minutes, allowing for exploration of the main character’s neighborhood and visits to diverse beauty stores where players can purchase items with their coins. Coins are easily found across the world and often reappear frequently, ensuring that acquiring items is never a financial burden.
Even though the daily morning ritual can become somewhat repetitive over time, it’s reassuring to see that the game acknowledges this. As we move closer to the climactic moments of the story, the usual pattern is creatively disrupted, offering a pleasant and humorous twist.
A capital ‘T’
This game, titled with Keita Takahashi’s name, embodies the quirky charm one would anticipate. It’s heartwarming, laugh-out-loud funny at times, and occasionally, it veers into the utterly peculiar. The game delivers on these qualities, but what sets it apart is its story that inspires both children and adults.
The game isn’t without its flaws, though. Some dialogue issues suggest localization hiccups, and occasional bugs required me to revert to a previous save point. Nevertheless, the main character’s charm is so compelling that it won’t take much for you to become his biggest fan. He is, indeed, an exceptionally well-designed protagonist.
