Under the direction of Adhik Ravichandran, the movie titled Good Bad Ugly featuring Ajith Kumar became a blockbuster at the box office. This Tamil action-thriller garnered exceptional accolades for its script, acting, music, and other aspects. It has now made its debut on Netflix for its digital screening.
Filmmaker Kasthuri Raja confirms legal action against Good Bad Ugly makers
Following the movie’s premiere, Kasthuri Raja, Dhanush’s father and film director, has publicly announced his intention to pursue a lawsuit against those responsible for Good Bad Ugly.
At a recent gathering, he voiced his concerns about contemporary movie directors excessively employing retro tunes in their productions, frequently neglecting to secure consent from the song’s initial composers.
During a recent publicity event for his movie Saamakoodangi in Salem, Kasthuri Raja expressed that while legends like Ilaiyaraaja and Deva produced music that will last forever, current creators often lean on nostalgia instead of originality. It’s acceptable to utilize older songs, but it is crucial to obtain permission from the original composers. Regrettably, this consideration appears to be overlooked these days.
Why will Kasthuri Raja take legal action on GBU?
If you’re not familiar, in April, the legal team of composer Ilaiyaraaja took action against the producers of Good Bad Ugly due to the unauthorized use of his songs “Ilamai Idho Idho,” “En Jodi Manja Kuruvi,” and “Oththa Roova” within their film.
As a devoted admirer of music, I learned that certain compositions I created were utilized, adjusted, and profited from in the movie featuring Ajith Kumar, all without seeking approval from their original creator.
Additionally, Ilaiyaraaja’s group requested a compensation of 50 million rupees from the movie producers, as well as a formal apology and the prompt deletion of the disputed songs.
Good Bad Ugly producers’ counter statement on claims
To counter these allegations, Mythri Movie Makers released a statement in April, denying any unauthorized usage of songs within their film.
They confirmed that they obtained necessary permissions from the music label owners for the songs featured in the movie. Since these labels own the rights, they adhered to proper procedures and received No Objection Certificates (NOCs) from them, ensuring everything was done legally and correctly.
