Lilo & Stitch: Why Captain Gantu Was Cut Explained by Director

In a recent chat, director Dean Fleischer Camp shared why the beloved character Captain Gantu, who was a key figure in the 2002 animated film Lilo & Stitch, wasn’t included in the 2025 live-action adaptation. Famously voiced by Kevin Michael Richardson, Gantu previously played an antagonistic role. Regrettably, it seems that his character was entirely absent from the storyline of the latest production.

Lilo & Stitch cut Captain Gantu to give Jumba the spotlight as villain

In a chat with Entertainment Weekly, Dean Fleischer Camp revealed that Captain Gantu was absent from the live-action Lilo & Stitch, allowing Dr. Jumba Jookiba, played by Zach Galifianakis, to step into the spotlight as the main villain in the film instead.

According to the director, excluding Gantu from the movie helped make it “more realistic.” He mentioned that he had to omit certain elements from the live-action version which were present in the animated one, as he felt those elements might not be as easily accepted in a real-life film. He further explained, “Our decisions on what to include were heavily influenced by maintaining the emotional authenticity of the movie.

As a devoted fan, I’ve always appreciated the animated version until Gantu showed up. Before him, it lacked a main antagonist. In his words, Gantu’s introduction transformed the 2002 production into a “more traditional film.” He further explained that there was an intriguing chance for Jumba to switch sides and take on the villainous role in the third act.

In other words, the filmmaker emphasized that it was important to have room in the plot for exploring the emotional depth of the tale, and having Gantu absent provided them with precisely that opportunity.

He explained that to make room for our feelings and personal growth, we sometimes need to let go of things. In this case, Gantu was an item discarded, but one I felt certain about from a narrative standpoint.

In an interview with the same media outlet, producer Jonathan Eirich shared that Gantu had originally been part of the script, but it was Fleischer Camp who proposed removing him. The director explained that Jumba was eventually selected as the primary antagonist because he embodied the film’s central themes.
