This Unmade Green Lantern Movie Would’ve Explored His Weakness & Infinite Powers

Christopher McQuarrie, a key figure in Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning as co-writer and director, shared insights about his unrealized projects – a sequel to Man of Steel and the Green Lantern film. He expressed that he devised a method to portray Green Lantern’s abilities and vulnerabilities on the big screen, but unfortunately, the production never materialized.

Christopher McQuarrie reveals his unmade Green Lantern movie’s premise

In an interview with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, McQuarrie discussed the scrapped Man of Steel sequel and Green Lantern film. When inquired about a follow-up to Zack Snyder’s 2013 superhero film, he replied, “I won’t spill the beans, but let me tell you it was fantastic!” He further stated, “The Green Lantern project was one that had been presented to me.” This implies that McQuarrie was offered the chance to direct a Green Lantern movie.

McQuarrie explained, “Green Lantern is a complex character – his strength and vulnerability make him intriguing. I figured out how to balance these aspects and it was exciting to see him grow through the process. I also introduced a flaw in his power, making it so that he wasn’t invincible.

McQuarrie emphasizes that the essence of Green Lantern lies in the fact that “the ring needs to be recharged, and this isn’t a flaw but a design element.” He hinted at abandoned projects that would have delved into this aspect. The filmmaker explained, “You possess unlimited power, but your battery life is limited, which can drain at inconvenient moments. For me, this addresses the entire Green Lantern challenge.

McQuarrie admitted that the design of the character’s outfit was a matter of contention. Particularly, the 2011 Green Lantern film with Ryan Reynolds faced significant backlash due to its CGI costume. McQuarrie suggested that they could have come up with a solution for this issue.

McQuarrie explained that he came to understand the importance of focusing on “dramatic tension and high stakes” rather than just the costume design. He revealed that he had conversations with Henry Cavill about this, which helped him see striking similarities between Green Lantern and Superman. These insights inspired him to create captivating conflicts and a resolution that would significantly expand the universe for these characters.
