Christopher McQuarrie reveals details about his Man of Steel 2 pitch with Henry Cavill
Director Christopher McQuarrie spoke about some aspects of his unreleased Man of Steel 2 film featuring Henry Cavill during the publicity for Mission: Impossible – Fallout (the title of the recently released movie).
In an interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, McQuarrie discussed the pitch he presented for Superman. Although the director didn’t disclose the plot details, he hinted that it was exceptional by saying, “It was exceptionally good.” During the conversation, he explained how his film would have started and laid the foundation for the rest of the story.
McQuarrie described his vision for the opening scene of his Superman movie as similar to the silent, dialogue-free intro in Pixar’s Up. This sequence would have provided insights into what drives Superman, what he fears most, and the reasons behind his decisions.
McQuarrie revealed that the project was initiated following Mission: Impossible – Fallout, and it currently involves stories about both Superman and Green Lantern. According to him, Henry proposed a unique perspective on these characters, which led him to recognize striking similarities between them. These similarities also presented opportunities for intense conflicts and a resolution that would significantly broaden the universe.
Additionally, he shared some insights into his interpretation of Green Lantern, emphasizing the potential constraints of the character’s abilities.
It seems that Warner Bros initially reached out to McQuarrie following Henry Cavill’s appearance in Black Adam. But things shifted when James Gunn took charge of DC Studios together with Peter Safran. Later, Gunn announced he would write and direct his own Superman film, slated for release on July 11. This development led Cavill to step down from the role, and McQuarrie’s adaptation was put aside.
Looking back at the abandoned project, McQuarrie remarked, “The film would have been breathtakingly amazing. The size and scope of it would have been simply astonishing.” His words offered a unique peek into an unused path for Superman within the DCEU, a route that was never pursued.
