AR Rahman on his colleagues Harris and Sai Abhyankkar as competition: ‘If we do fewer films…’

Recently, I had a delightful conversation with director KS Ravikumar regarding our upcoming project, Thug Life, scheduled for release on June 5, 2025. In the run-up to the film’s premiere, I was queried about whether I view musicians like Anirudh Ravichander and Sai Abhyankkar as rivals. However, in my perspective, I see them not as competition, but as fellow artists striving for excellence in our shared passion for music.

In response to the question, AR Rahman told Behindwoods TV that he is actually quite pleased about it. He believes that by working on fewer films, he can produce songs of a higher caliber. When talented musicians such as Harris Jayaraj, Anirudh Ravichander, and Sai Abhyankkar emerge, it gives him more time to compose music. This allows him to live his life more comfortably.

Besides AR Rahman’s thoughts, Kamal Haasan underscored the importance of modern-day rivalry for creative individuals to foster their artistic development. He stressed that such competition is crucial for an artist’s advancement and pointed out that AR Rahman himself has been substantially inspired by previous musicians.

In case you didn’t know, well-known musicians such as Harris Jayaraj, Anirudh Ravichander, and the rising star, Sai Abhyankkar, have been working together with AR Rahman more recently.

Regarding AR Rahman’s upcoming projects, he is gearing up for a big-screen debut with the movie titled Thug Life. This action-packed gangster film follows the story of Rangaraaya Sakthivel Nayakar, a mafia boss who takes in a young boy named Amaran and raises him as his own.

In the course of my aging years, I, Sakthivel, designate Amaran as my trusted confidant. Yet, when whispers of my demise echo, I stage an astonishing comeback, driven by a thirst for vengeance. Suspicion gnaws at me, pointing towards my foster son as the possible perpetrator. This sets off a chilling dance of treachery and survival, where every move could mean life or death.

Mani Ratnam himself, along with Kamal Haasan, is credited as the co-writer of this film. In the leading roles, you’ll find veterans like Kamal Haasan and Silambarasan TR. The cast also includes Trisha Krishnan, Abhirami, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Ashok Selvan, Joju George, Nassar, and several others in crucial parts.

Counting down the days until the big day! It seems like the creators have something special in store for us fans – an audio launch event with none other than the legendary AR Rahman performing live! Excitement is running high, and I can hardly wait to see what else he has up his sleeve. As it stands, he’s got quite a few projects on the horizon, like Tere Ishk Mein, Peddi, Genie, and so much more. This man never ceases to amaze me!
