Intrigued as to why Jennifer Lopez is being sued once more, and what led to a legal dispute based on paparazzi photos? It appears that the music legend is embroiled in another copyright infringement issue, this time involving two professional photographers who allege she used their pictures without consent.
Why is Jennifer Lopez getting sued by paparazzi?
Jennifer Lopez finds herself in legal troubles yet again, with accusations that she shared two pictures taken by paparazzi on her social media accounts without obtaining the necessary permissions or licenses.
On May 17, two lawsuits were filed, stemming from photographs taken outside Amazon MGM Studios’ Vanity Fair Golden Globes pre-party at LA’s Bar Marmont on January 4. These suits were initiated by photographer Edwin Blanco and the photo agency BackGrid USA.
Based on the allegations, Lopez found herself in a sticky situation after sharing the images on Instagram and X the day after without proper permission. The lawsuit suggests that her post incited re-shares by fan pages and even fashion companies, such as the designer of the faux fur coat she wore in the photographs.
Lawyer Peter Perkowski, speaking for Blanco and BackGrid, asserted that Jennifer Lopez employed the images for promotional purposes. He clarified that this “unauthorized usage of the Images” was commercially driven. He contends that Lopez exploited the event’s publicity to strengthen her fashion partnerships and business agreements. (Adapted from Billboard)
According to court documents, it appears that representatives from BackGrid and Blanco contacted Lopez’s team soon after the event in question. Initially, there was an agreement reached verbally, but Lopez is said to have not signed a written contract or fulfilled the promised payment as alleged.
It’s not the first instance that Jennifer Lopez has been accused of copyright infringement. Back in 2019, she encountered a similar legal challenge for sharing a paparazzi picture featuring her ex-partner Alex Rodriguez. That lawsuit was voluntarily dropped, but Perkowski contends it should have acted as a cautionary tale.
Additionally, he alleges that Lopez demonstrates an intentional indifference towards the copyright law. This potential infringement could result in penalties amounting to $150,000 for each image. However, at present, neither Jennifer Lopez nor her team has issued a public statement regarding this matter.
