Have you ever pondered, “If only I could control it using WASD keys”? If not, that might seem like a jest, but very soon, you’ll have the opportunity to experience a fresh control setup.
Right-Click To Move
Since League of Legends branched off from DotA way back when, the control scheme was already in place thanks to the preceding strategy game Warcraft 3. In other words, the button layout we’ve been using for 15 years has remained consistent.
In simple terms, Q, W, E are the basic skills, R is the ultimate skill, D and F keys house summoner spells (with Flash on F), and controlling the champion is done by right-clicking. Hovering over a target causes your character to fire at it. However, nobody anticipated what Riot Games has recently developed.
How Is It Supposed To Work?
The renowned League of Legends content creator, “SkinSpotlights,” is as vital to a community as anyone can be. Want to know about the new skins in the upcoming patch? Check out his video on his channel. Looking for specific interactions or all voice lines of a champion? Again, it’s SkinSpotlights. In one of his recent discussions, he provides an initial glimpse into the new control system – however, it raises more questions than it answers.
1. Way of Input Method Update: We’re introducing WASD as a fresh, official input method for you soon!
2. Settings Explanation: Flash has three settings – “Cursor”, “WASD with Cursor Enhanced”, and “WASD with Cursor Fallback”. I’m not quite sure about their specific functions yet.
3. Functionality Clarification: Even under the WASD input method, you can still click to move around.
4. Smart Cast Feature: There’s a toggle for smart casting, which allows your character to shoot in the direction it’s currently facing.

Here we can also see that it includes individual modes for the summoner spell Flash.
As a keen follower, let me clarify that what you’re seeing here are snapshots from our public testing phase. In simpler terms, these are areas we’re currently refining and evaluating. Keep in mind that some of these changes might not make it to the main servers, as they undergo further testing and adjustments.
The Community Is Beyond Divided
Although this modification might initially seem thrilling, it doesn’t appear crucial at a quick glance. If you’re not feeling compelled to make the switch, then by all means, carry on as usual…isn’t that so? However, it’s important to note that while some players are overjoyed about such an update for numerous reasons, there are also those who aren’t quite as enthused.
As an avid player, I can’t help but voice my concern that the proposed changes might potentially lead to the decline of the beloved online game we all cherish. It’s not merely fueled by anger; it’s a genuine fear based on the impact such changes could have on our gaming experience.
Is League Becoming Too Easy?
It’s tough to argue against the fact that the change has simplified certain mechanics within the game, notably the strategy known as ‘kiting’. Kiting is a tactic where you maintain a set distance from your opponent, often while retreating, only to momentarily stop and attack them. Skilled players who excel at kiting move in such a way that standing still barely slows them down.
To illustrate the whole thing well, here is a good clip on reddit.
As a gamer, I’ve got to say, mastering the old technique was like walking a tightrope without a net – tricky to grasp at first and even harder to pull off! You had to right-click where you wanted to go, then move your cursor back over the opponent while clicking again in front of you to keep moving. But
You Don’t Switch – You Already Lost
Given the scenario described, it appears that many gamers express concern about the future of League of Legends due to its highly competitive nature and the necessity for specific skills. If one does not adapt, they will undoubtedly find themselves at a disadvantage because the game’s dynamics primarily focus on optimizing resource utilization.
Besides influencing each individual game, it also shapes the entire esports community. Here, competition reaches an unprecedented level of precision, leading us to ponder what strategies should be employed to ensure fairness between these two distinct forms of governance in high-level competition.
It seems that as Wild Rift, the mobile adaptation of League of Legends, gains popularity, there’s growing speculation about whether the PC version of League might eventually phase out. Even if the PC version doesn’t disappear entirely, it’s clear that the game will undergo significant changes from its previous form.
What do you think? Are you a fan of the new controls? Or are you worried about this news?
