Curious if The Rookie won’t air a new episode this week, or if the series has secretly concluded after Season 7’s finale due to unresolved plot points such as Monica’s release and Tim’s heartfelt act towards Lucy? The season-ending cliffhangers left fans yearning for resolution. However, ABC has provided some clarity through schedule changes and the show’s official renewal for another season.
Here’s what we know so far about The Rookie’s Season 7 ending and the expected arrival of Season 8.
Why The Rookie Season 7 won’t air a new episode this week on May 20
On May 20, 2025, there will be no airing of Season 7 Episode 19 of The Rookie, as the season has already ended with its eighteenth episode, titled “The Good, the Bad, and the Oscar,” which aired on May 13, 2025.
As a gamer, I’ve got some news straight from ABC: Episode 18 marked the grand finale of our current season, with no more episodes lined up for now. Showrunner Alexi Hawley hinted at TVLine about the unfinished business between Tim and Lucy, saying “We’re almost there,” implying that we should brace ourselves for some resolution in the storyline.
In the final episode, an important plot point was Monica gaining her freedom as she exchanged crucial information with the government for immunity. At the same time, Tim suggested that Lucy should live with him, not realizing that she had dozed off and thus failed to hear his entire proposal.
Based on reports from ABC, the show has been garnering impressive viewership, reaching its highest three-week average audience in almost half a decade. ABC’s decision to conclude the season with Episode 18 seems consistent with their approach of continuous midseason broadcasts.
Is The Rookie over or will new episodes come out soon?
The TV show “The Rookie” hasn’t ended yet. In fact, it’s been picked up for a new season, Season 8, which is set to air sometime between early and mid-2026 on ABC.
Based on TVLine reports, ABC plans to follow the same effective strategy used in January, by airing all 18 episodes of the show back-to-back. While the official cast roster hasn’t been announced yet, it’s likely that Nathan Fillion, who has featured in every episode and is also an executive producer, will rejoin the series.
In an interview with TVLine in May 2025, Alexi Hawley shared that the writers are currently developing Season 8 of the show, with the next installment set to begin relatively soon following the Season 7 finale. Hawley emphasized that several time-critical storylines, such as Monica’s immunity agreement and the unfinished dialogue between Tim and Lucy, need to be addressed promptly in this new season.
