Vijay Deverakonda REFLECTS on Liger’s failure and if he regrets it now: ‘It was a great idea on paper’

Vijay Deverakonda is excitedly counting down the days until his upcoming movie Kingdom hits cinemas on July 4, 2025. Before this film graces the silver screen, the actor recently chatted with Filmfare, sharing some thoughts about the less successful release of Liger.

Discussing his feelings about the role and whether he regretted being involved in the project, Vijay stated that he didn’t have those emotions and acknowledged that he was deeply engrossed in the character instead.

According to him, I became utterly captivated by crafting my character, mastering martial arts, sculpting my body to resemble a warrior, and overcoming my stutter. Every aspect of this role was so demanding that I found immense pleasure in the journey of bringing it to life.

Speaking about his admiration for director Puri Jagannadh, the actor expressed, “From my youth, I’ve been an ardent fan and appreciator of this director. One of the films that has held a special place in my heart is Pokiri starring Mahesh Babu sir. It was something I always aspired to work on with him. Unfortunately, our collaboration didn’t result in a film as good as it could have been based on its potential. However, I have no regrets about the final product.

Beyond sharing this, the actor emphasized that he gained significant insights from the Liger project. Vijay highlights that these learnings have profoundly affected him, a transformation which is evident now and will continue to manifest in his upcoming endeavors.

For those not in the know, Liger is a 2022 sports action drama that was both written and directed by Puri Jagannadh. In this film, we follow the story of a young MMA fighter named Liger who has dreams of becoming an exceptional boxer, a goal driven by his father’s legacy and fueled by his mother’s ambition.

The movie, filmed simultaneously in Hindi and Telugu, showcased Vijay portraying two roles – father and son – alongside an impressive group of actors such as Ananya Panday, Ramya Krishna, Ronit Roy, and others, including Mike Tyson, a renowned American boxer, making a guest appearance. However, Liger received harsh criticism from critics and unfortunately underperformed at the box office.

In the near future, Vijay Deverakonda will star in “Kingdom,” an upcoming spy-thriller movie that’s rumored to be the first part of a two-part series. Additionally, he has other projects such as VD14 and SVC59 lined up as well.
