Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey Is First Blockbuster Shot Entirely on IMAX Cameras

Christopher Nolan is poised to create history, as “The Odyssey” will be the initial blockbuster to be filmed completely using IMAX cameras.

Why is The Odyssey only using IMAX cameras?

Throughout most of his professional journey, Nolan has primarily employed IMAX cameras, even in the making of the Academy Award-winning Oppenheimer. Yet, until now, he hasn’t filmed an entire movie exclusively with these cameras. The reason for this is that IMAX cameras come with practical difficulties concerning their size, weight, sound, and speed, which can complicate matters when trying to use them extensively in a production.

Rich Gelfond, IMAX’s CEO, disclosed the agreement he struck with Nolan that persuaded the movie creators to capture The Odyssey in its entirety using IMAX cameras.

At a press gathering in Cannes on Thursday (as reported by The Hollywood Reporter), Gelfond stated, “Chris contacted me and suggested that if we could find solutions to the issues, he would ensure [Odyssey] is presented at 100% in IMAX. And that’s exactly what we’re working on.” Essentially, Chris challenged us to revise our approach to certain aspects of our business, particularly our film recorders and cameras.

According to Gelfond, the IMAX cameras used in ‘The Odyssey’ are 30% less noisy and significantly lighter. Moreover, these improvements result in quicker processing speeds, facilitating a smoother experience when watching daily footage.

The latest IMAX cameras are exclusively being used by Nolan at present, however, the company intends to integrate them into additional productions once The Odyssey has been finished.

According to Homer’s famous poem, The Odyssey narrates the challenging voyage of the Greek hero Odysseus as he attempts to return home following the Trojan War. Similar to Christopher Nolan’s films, The Odyssey showcases an impressive roster of top-tier stars and character actors. This star-studded cast includes Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Anne Hathaway, Charlize Theron, Jon Bernthal, Benny Safdie, and more.

As a gamer, I’m super excited to share that the upcoming film, “The Odyssey,” is directed by none other than Christopher Nolan, who’s teaming up with his wife, Emma Thomas, for production. This will be Nolan’s first project since his critically acclaimed and Best Picture-winning masterpiece, “Oppenheimer.” A gripping tale about the life of theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer.

The Odyssey premieres in theaters on July 17, 2026.
