Tony Gilroy, the mastermind behind the creation and management of Andor, shed light on why Darth Vader and Grand Moff Tarkin didn’t make an appearance in the show. Launched on Disney+ in September 2022, the series unfolded across two seasons before wrapping up on May 13, 2025. Remarkably, functions as a precursor to the 2016 film, Rogue One, within the expansive Star Wars universe.

In a recent conversation with Deadline, creator Gilroy clarified his decision to exclude Darth Vader and Grand Moff Tarkin from Andor Season 2. When inquired about the absence of these well-known Star Wars figures, Gilroy stated, “I would have included them if they were necessary.”

Star Wars continues to grow with many unseen characters, but during a recent chat, both Darth Vader and Director Krennic were brought up. This might be due to their significant roles in Rogue One.

In the movie, it’s Tarkin who orchestrates the deaths of Diego Luna’s character Cassian Andor, Jyn Erso (played by Felicity Jones), and many others. Towards the finale, Tarkin orders the Death Star to blast the Citadel Tower on Scarif, resulting in their demise along with others. Meanwhile, Vader slays numerous rebels in his pursuit of the Death Star blueprints, but fails in his mission.

At the conclusion of Andor Season 2, events are expertly arranged to pave the way for Rogue One. Characters Cassian and the ex-Imperial droid K-2SO embark on a journey towards the Ring of Kafrene, where they later meet the informant Tivik – a scene that unfolds early in the Rogue One movie.

During the same interview, Gilroy unequivocally stated that he had no intentions of producing a third season. Furthermore, he expressed uncertainty about finding a solution to continue the series. Regarding Star Wars, he declined any further participation beyond Andor. When inquired if there was more Star Wars for him, Gilroy responded, “I don’t believe so. I’ve been involved for ten years now, from Rogue One to this point.
