Elden Ring Nightreign’s story structure sounds weird, I’m just not sure if it’s the good kind yet

Players familiar with FromSoftware’s Souls series are well-versed in the unique narrative style these games employ. Characters you encounter often speak in cryptic terms, and clues about the game’s lore can be found in weapons and items as well. However, given the emphasis on dynamic gameplay in Elden Ring Nightreign, which encourages continuous exploration, I’ve been pondering how its story will unfold. Interestingly, I’ve discovered that the narrative in the upcoming Elden Ring is quite distinct from its original concept.

In an interview with IGN, game director Junya Ishizaki outlined that “Nightreign” takes place in a setting similar to Elden Ring’s world, but on a distinct stage. The central idea is the Night Lord, which can be thought of as a mysterious event or catastrophe that has affected The Lands Between in an alternate timeline. This phenomenon isn’t something that was planned or intentional; it occurred naturally and has impacted the lands between, necessitating some form of resistance.

In this game, the opposition takes shape as the enigmatic group known as the Nightfarers, whom you control as playable characters. Unlike Elden Ring, where a central storyline is pursued, your primary focus here will be uncovering the backstories of each Nightfarer through artifacts called Remembrances.

In Nightreign’s adaptation of the Roundtable Hold, you have the opportunity to explore your character’s past experiences through a journal known as Remembrances. These can be simple logs one moment, and immersive memory-living episodes the next. After interacting with an NPC within a Remembrance, you are given a task to accomplish. These tasks differ depending on the character, such as Wylder hunting for a specific item in a cave or Raider battling bosses in one-on-one fights.

I haven’t made up my mind yet about the game structure until I try it out myself. I have faith that the Nightfarers’ histories will retain that intriguing FromSoftware enigma, but I’m concerned they might seem more added-on than seamlessly integrated. Fingers crossed, I hope it comes together well because I appreciate the idea of each character having distinct roles. Here’s hoping for the best!
