In a recent interview, Showrunner Craig Sweeny discussed the surprising ending of the Watson Season 1 finale, shedding light on the creative decisions that led to this plot twist.
He said the finale marked a turning point for Watson and that Moriarty’s end may impact Season 2.
Craig Sweeny explains Moriarty’s death in Watson’s finale
In the final episode of Season 1, Dr. Watson contrives to infect Randall Park’s character with a custom-made illness. As Moriarty refuses to heal Stephens, Watson allows Moriarty to succumb to the very disease he had been exposed to.
As a gaming enthusiast, I’d put it this way: “I didn’t take this action out of revenge, but more like a precautionary measure to limit the potential harm he could cause in the future with his extensive genetic data.
The series portrayed Moriarty’s demise as an inevitable outcome following the crisis sparked by his theft of the DNA library. Sweeney commented, “He had the ability to kill virtually anyone on Earth without a hint that he had misused the confidential data from Watson’s patients.
In the course of Season 1, the choice to eliminate him served as a pivotal moment in a plotline where Watson emerged from Sherlock Holmes’ influence. As Sweeny explained, this season represented Watson’s journey towards self-reliance by challenging Sherlock Holmes’ adversary and eventually overcoming him.
The showrunner highlighted that the mysteries surrounding Moriarty will continue to matter. “The unanswered questions regarding Moriarty still remain intriguing from a storytelling perspective,” he explained. “We intend for the main plot of Season 2 to provide more insight into his character,” Sweeny continued.
In another scenario, it’s possible that Moriarty could have influenced Ingrid differently. If their encounter had transpired at a different time, he might have yielded a distinct outcome, according to the showrunner. As the series progressed, Ingrid grew closer not only to Watson but also to Sasha, especially towards the end.
Despite the demise of Moriarty, it’s been affirmed by Sweeny that “The Sherlock Holmes lore won’t disappear… real incidents and characters from these tales will play a part in Season 2.”
Notably, the producers have not yet announced the release date of Season 2.
