Thunderbolts* & Sinners Hold Strong at Global Box Office

In recent box office standings, both “Thunderbolts*” and “Sinners” have been dominating, causing discussions about similarities among different genres and film series. Interestingly, despite a significant decrease in its second weekend, the performance of “Thunderbolts*” is still closely matching past titles from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). On the other hand, “Sinners” has been consistently strong, breaking important benchmarks for horror movies during its fourth weekends.

Thunderbolts* wins second weekend at box office

In its second weekend, Disney and Marvel Studio’s movie, the Thunderbolts*, made $33 million – a decrease of 55% compared to its opening weekend earnings of $74.3 million.

The movie has accumulated a total of $272.1 million worldwide so far, with earnings of $128.4 million domestically and $143.7 million internationally. This places its revenue slightly behind Captain America: Brave New World by approximately $12.7 million but comfortably ahead of Eternals at the same point in time by $10.3 million. The film is currently being screened in 4,330 theaters and analysts predict it will see a boost from Memorial Day and increased summer attendance.

In simple terms, Thunderbolts had a similar decrease in earnings during its second week as Shang-Chi (-54%) and outperformed Brave New World (-68%). According to Deadline, it made approximately $86.7 million over the weekend, representing a 10% drop compared to the same timeframe last year.

Sinners inches closer to $300 million at global box office

As a passionate moviegoer, I can’t help but share that over the past weekend, Warner Bros.’ film, Sinners, managed to rake in an impressive $21.1 million. However, there was a slight dip compared to the previous week, with a decrease of 36%.

On Friday, it earned approximately $6.5 million, boosting its domestic earnings to a total of around $214.4 million. Its international earnings currently stand at about $68.9 million, resulting in a worldwide total of roughly $283.3 million. Compared to the fourth weekends of The Sixth Sense ($20 million) and It ($16.9 million), it exceeded both figures. However, it still falls short of The Blair Witch Project’s weekend earnings of $24.3 million. (Data from Box Office Mojo.)

In 3,502 cinemas across the country, the movie “Sinners,” helmed by Ryan Coogler and featuring Michael B. Jordan, is currently being shown. It’s holding its ground exceptionally well compared to other horror movies during its fourth week, and will be featured in IMAX 70MM theaters from May 15th through the 21st. The film has also consistently earned revenue on weekdays since its release, which has helped it maintain a strong presence in cinemas for over a month.

Both Thunderbolts and Sinners are holding their ground as summer blockbusters, maintaining their performance before the arrival of competing films such as Final Destination: Bloodlines.
