This season, the box office is being driven by hits like “A Minecraft Movie,” which recently surpassed $900 million at the global box office and is nearing $1 billion, as well as “Thunderbolts*” and “Sinners” that are dominating music charts. While “Thunderbolts*” has seen a significant drop in its second week, “Sinners” remains robust in its fourth weekend. Meanwhile, “A Minecraft Movie” continues to make strides towards the $1 billion mark despite facing growing competition from summer releases.
A Minecraft Movie box office goes past $900 million
The global box office earnings for the Minecraft film have now exceeded $909.5 million, marking a significant milestone.
The movie made a total of $909,586,434 within its first 38 days, with 45% coming from domestic sales ($408,986,434) and the remaining 55% ($500,600,000) from international markets. The film, rated PG, was released by Warner Bros. on April 4, 2025, in 4,263 cinemas, and it grossed $162.7 million during its opening weekend.
As reported by Variety, the film is currently ranked third in earnings at the domestic box office, trailing behind Thunderbolts and Sinners. In its sixth week, it brought in approximately $9 million, suggesting a gradual decrease in revenue as summer movie competition intensifies. It continues to hold the position of the second highest-grossing video game film ever made, following the release of 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie ($1.36 billion).
On April 4th (Friday), the movie made a debut with $57,113,324 and rose slightly to $59,409,839 on Saturday. The first weekend’s earnings summed up to a massive $162.7 million. By its second Friday, the earnings had decreased to $20.5 million, and by the third Friday, it reported $16 million. As of May 11th (Sunday), the latest figure shows a revenue of $2.5 million, bringing the total domestic income up to $408.9 million.
The movie performed exceptionally well in North America and various overseas territories, largely due to enthusiastic audience attendance and aggressive marketing. Its success was further fueled by the fans’ interest. Warner Bros. financed the production of the film at an estimated cost of $150 million. The plot revolves around four oddball characters navigating a cube-shaped universe in their quest to return home.
The movie has surpassed $400 million in domestic sales and $900 million globally, but experts believe it’s improbable for it to reach $1 billion. Potential competition during the summer season and decreasing weekly revenues might cap its future profits.
