Lokesh Kanagaraj spills beans on his idea of choosing a script: ‘Interval block is very important thing for every film’

In a little over two months, Coolie will be gracing movie theaters on August 14th, and fans can hardly wait to catch it and witness Rajinikanth weave his spellbinding magic. As the release date draws nearer, anticipation is building, and in an exclusive chat with Sudhir Srinivasan, director Lokesh Kanagaraj shared insights about the movie. Additionally, he delved into the significance of the interval segment in films.

Lokesh Kanagaraj pointed out that audiences often anticipate a significant scene around halfway through a movie, which gives them a chance to get refreshments like popcorn or drinks. Upon their return, they expect more action. This pattern is quite common in filmmaking, he noted. Furthermore, designing the interval section presents a creative hurdle for him as well.

The interviewer inquired about the method used by the director of Coolie to establish a compelling turning point within the narrative. Lokesh Kanagaraj responded by explaining that when he begins writing a film, he focuses on finding three key elements: a captivating opening scene, a robust middle section, or an emotionally charged ending. He stated that if any one of these aspects excites him, he feels confident in developing the story further.

If the intensity just isn’t there from any of them, he won’t proceed. To him, a movie is nothing without that jaw-dropping scene that sets the stage for the rest of the storyline.

In his opinion, a compelling opening, strong midpoint, or powerful climax are essential for a story to be worth telling. If he feels confident that at least one of these elements is well-developed, he will consider working on that particular story. Conversely, if none of these key components show promise, he won’t pursue the story further.

Regarding Coolie, it’s set to star prominent actors like Rajinikanth, Soubin Shahir, Nagarjuna Akkineni, Upendra Rao, and Shruti Haasan. Notably, this film is expected to compete with War 2, which features Jr NTR and Hrithik Roshan, during the Independence Day week at the box office. With Thalaivar’s movie getting closer to its release date, fans are eagerly anticipating seeing him portray a character with some ambiguous moral traits.
