The Zaha Hadid Architects-designed Shenzhen Science and Technology Museum has been unveiled in China’s Guangming District. This futuristic building aims to establish itself as a prominent landmark within the expanding tech-focused Greater Bay Area, which boasts an almost 100 million-strong population.
The museum, featuring a bold, spherical structure, stands prominently towards the city and expands westward into a science park, converting into a series of outdoor terraces that offer scenic views of the greenery below. These terraces act as extensions of the internal galleries, which are arranged around a grand central atrium, thus generating a vibrant new civic area. The building showcases Zaha Hadid’s distinctive futuristic style, characterized by her fluid forms, with its dual-toned stainless steel exterior that subtly transitions from deep blue to grey, reminiscent of the movement of celestial bodies.
Covering approximately 128,000 square meters, this museum boasts an impressive 35,000 square meters divided between permanent and temporary exhibition spaces, galleries, immersive theaters, cinemas, research laboratories, educational facilities, and an innovation center, taking up a combined total of 6,000 and 5,400 square meters respectively. The design emphasizes sustainability, aiming for China’s highest three-star green building rating by employing passive environmental strategies such as minimizing solar heat gain and using a ventilated facade system. Additionally, it includes systems for recycling grey water and collecting rainwater to conserve water, and employs photovoltaic panels for on-site energy production. During construction, advanced digital technologies like BIM and 3D scanning were utilized to accurately build the intricate architectural structures.
