Every year, the first Monday in May is the highlight of fashion events, marking the start of the Met Gala’s high-end fashion charity event for the Costume Institute. Just like past Met Galas, this year’s event, the 2025 Met Gala, was filled with style and drama, focusing on “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.” This year’s theme delved into the significant impact of Black menswear and dandyism on international fashion trends. Breaking a tradition spanning more than two decades, this year’s theme focused specifically on men’s fashion, last seen in 2003 with “Men in Skirts,” and for the first time ever, it spotlighted Black designers and the rich history of Black sartorialism.

Drawing inspiration from Monica L. Miller’s influential book “Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity” published in 2009, the Costume Institute’s exhibition and Met Gala aimed to explore the complex idea of dandyism – encompassing both a style and a tactical approach. The event showcased how, from the 18th century up until today, Black individuals have creatively used fashion and personal style as a means to create identities, defy social norms, and assert their presence and autonomy in societies marked by racial, gender, and class disparities. The exhibition was organized into twelve segments, each focusing on a key aspect of Black dandy fashion, including Ownership, Presence, Distinction, Freedom, Heritage, and Cosmopolitanism.

The dress code titled “Tailored For You” served as a blueprint for creativity, inviting guests to reinterpret it in their unique ways. Notable figures took up this challenge with enthusiasm, interpreting the theme with flair and panache. Some chose to honor traditional tailoring by donning impeccably tailored suits ranging from classic black and white tuxedos to modern, colorful versions.

Zendaya made a strong statement with her all-white three-piece suit from Louis Vuitton, complete with a tie and a wide-brimmed hat, demonstrating expert tailoring. Colman Domingo arrived dramatically draped in a glittering azure cape by Valentino, later revealing a pearl-adorned checked blazer that showcased an extravagant take on dandyism.

Teyana Taylor’s ensemble was a powerful tribute to Black fashion history, drawing inspiration from the Zoot Suit era in collaboration with Ruth E. Carter. A number of attendees had their personal interpretations of “Tailored,” as exemplified by Rihanna, who showcased a modern twist on early 20th-century dandy style while debuting her baby bump in a custom Marc Jacobs ensemble. Co-host A$AP Rocky also made an impact with his unique suit designed by his creative agency, AWGE, paired with a black parka and a diamond-crested umbrella. His self-designed look was a distinct and personal interpretation of the “Tailored For You” dress code.
