Previously this year, the head of GameStop, Ryan Cohen, revealed plans to offload GameStop’s operations in both Canada and France. Now, a transaction has been finalized with Canadian businessman Stephan Tetrault, who will take over GameStop Canada and rename it EB Games Canada.
Today, Stephan Tetrault shared on LinkedIn that he has taken over GameStop Canada. In his post, he discusses the reasoning behind this acquisition, which he describes as a blend of sound business strategy and a deep-seated enthusiasm for the company and its sector.
In simpler terms, Ryan Cohen, CEO of GameStop, explained that his company’s decision to sell GameStop Canada and Micromania France was driven by “Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion” (DEI) initiatives and the concept often referred to as “wokeness,” which he discussed in a post earlier this year. The new owner, Stephan Tetrault, is already familiar with the collectibles industry, given that he’s one of the co-owners of MacFarlane Toys.
As per a report by Bloomberg, GameStop currently manages 185 stores in Canada. Previously known as EB Games, these stores underwent a rebranding to GameStop as late as 2021. However, recent developments have led to all Canadian GameStop locations returning to their original name, EB Games Canada.
