Gears of War Ditches Xbox Exclusivity for PS5, Is Halo Next?

Originally released on Xbox, Gears of War is now making its way to PlayStation 5 as a fresh version called Gears of War: Reloaded. This iconic game is stepping onto the PlayStation platform for the first time, nearly two decades after its initial launch.

Reloaded is a revamped version of the 2006 original. It’s essentially an enhanced edition of the game, offering some new features, bug corrections, and improved performance.

In essence, Reloaded offers the complete campaign from the original game with updated graphics, along with the adored multiplayer mode. This revamped edition will operate in native 4K resolution and 120 frames per second (FPS) on PlayStation 5, similar to the Xbox Series X version. Notably, crossplay functionality will be included as well.

Microsoft announced that ‘Gears of War: Reloaded’ is a tribute to one of gaming’s most recognized series. With 4K resolution, 120 FPS compatibility, and an exceptional multiplayer mode that includes cross-progression and cross-play across all platforms, this version offers the best way to play the game that started it all.

2026 marks the 20th anniversary of the Gears of War franchise, and as we look back on its history, it’s not just about the tales we’ve spun or the bonds we’ve forged; it’s also about the incredible experiences we’ve collectively enjoyed. With the release of Gears of War: Reloaded, we aim to invite more gamers than ever before to join us in this epic journey.

Additionally, the updated edition of this game will be accessible not only on PlayStation 5 but also on PC and Xbox Series consoles. If you’ve already purchased the Ultimate Edition on these platforms, you’ll receive an upgrade for free. However, if you haven’t, the new port will retail at $39.99. Regarding a Nintendo Switch 2 version, there’s currently no news, but Microsoft has expressed plans to support that system in the future.

The game includes the following features:

  • 4K resolution
  • 60 FPS in Campaign
  • 120 FPS in Multiplayer
  • High Dynamic Range (HDR)
  • Dolby Vision & 7.1.4 Dolby Atmos
  • 7.1.4 3D Spatial Audio
  • Variable Refresh Rate (VRR)
  • 4K assets and remastered textures
  • Enhanced post-processing visual effects
  • Improved shadows and reflections
  • Super resolution with improved anti-aliasing
  • Zero loading screens during Campaign

In addition to the updated version of the initial game, developers The Coalition and People Can Fly are simultaneously creating a prequel titled Gears of War E-Day using Unreal Engine 5. At this time, details on the new game are scarce, but fans are eagerly anticipating the potential return of the Beast Mode from Gears 3.

With Forza Horizon 5 and Gears of War now available on PlayStation 5, only one game remains exclusively on Xbox: Halo. As 343 Industries, now known as Halo Studios, strategize the next moves for their flagship Xbox series, it appears inevitable that the franchise will eventually make its way to PlayStation. Can you imagine that happening?
