There’s a buzz surrounding the possibilities of VR in gaming. The PSVR2 is already out for PlayStation, while on PC, Meta Quest is currently the top VR headset choice. Previously, there were rumors about Valve developing their own virtual reality gaming headset. Now, a well-known leaker suggests that Valve’s independent Deckard VR headset may be in the works, but due to US tariffs, its release has been slightly delayed.
Valve’s next-gen Deckard VR headset is “still aiming for 2025,” claims leaker
In the most recent SteamOS update, it’s been mentioned that Valve is integrating “Arm support experimentally”. As noted by Notebookcheck, this could potentially have significant consequences. Previous speculation pointed towards the addition of Arm support in SteamOS, which some believed was in preparation for the anticipated release of the Valve Deckard, a standalone VR headset that has been eagerly awaited.
On the 4th of May, SadlyItsBradley on X announced that Valve inadvertently released a SteamVR beta version last night. This revelation suggested that the SteamVR Link streaming from Linux PCs would be available soon, and it also featured additional Deckard room setup/tracking codes. However, the update was reversed just 4 minutes after it was published.
In response to SadlyItsBradley’s discussion about the SteamVR update, a well-known Valve insider known as gabefollower stated that the Deckard is “still targeting a 2025 launch,” but “U.S. tariffs have caused a slight delay in the initial plans.
Previously, it was Gabe Follower who disclosed information about a device known as Deckard, back in February. As per the source, Deckard is described as an independent, wireless VR headset (codenamed Deckard). At the time of the report, the estimated price for the complete package was $1200, which would also come with some pre-made games or demos that have already been developed.
It was additionally disclosed that the device will utilize the same SteamOS as the Steam Deck, tailored for virtual reality. One of its key features allows you to play games from the Steam Deck library on a large screen in VR, without needing a computer.
The release date of the Deckard remains uncertain, though we’re optimistic about the target year of 2025. Unfortunately, ItsBradley’s guess points towards a potential release in November, but keep in mind that this is more of an educated guess than a definite fact.
