In a conversation with PC Gamer following GDC 2025, Barone shared that he doesn’t actively “experiment” with Stardew Valley mods. Despite having the game’s most prominent modder on board to help with updates, Barone isn’t particularly keen on testing out mods extensively. However, it’s quite fascinating to observe this development.
Stardew Valley creator doesn’t play mods
During the interview, Barone was questioned about Baldur’s Village – a widely recognized mod for Baldur’s Gate 3 combined with Stardew Valley, which Wizards of the Coast removed. Despite knowing about this mod, Barone himself hasn’t experimented with it and typically avoids using mods in general.
The developer mentioned that he hasn’t personally experimented with it, “I haven’t given Stardew Valley mods a go,” he said. However, he has observed various images, screen captures, and even perused an article about it, finding the concept quite intriguing.
The developer stated that modders now possess an extraordinary level of influence and flexibility over every minute detail. He expressed optimism that these capabilities will be used to create custom content. Furthermore, he mentioned that Stardew Valley appears unsophisticated at first glance, giving the impression that it could easily be modified, making it seem inviting for users to develop mods.
Barone clarified that Stardew Valley serves as an excellent starting point for people who want to delve into modding, however, it doesn’t necessarily mean he has to try out all these mods himself. To put it simply, there are numerous Stardew Valley mods available, and they showcase a high level of quality, but with so many options, it can be overwhelming to go through them all.
