First Look: Paul Mescal & Josh O’Connor as Lovers in ‘The History of Sound’

Four years back, I learned that Paul Mescal and Josh O’Connor would star in the World War I drama, “The History of Sound.” But then, you know how it goes – pandemic, money troubles, and SAG-AFTRA disputes hit pause on set. Luckily, the team behind “The History of Sound” has managed to get things moving again! Recently, we’ve been treated to some stunning initial photos of our leading men as they bring their characters to life in this romantic tale.

In films such as “Aftersun” and “All of Us Strangers”, Mescal has moved us to tears. He also displayed his formidable warrior spirit in “Gladiator II”. On the other hand, O’Connor has been exploring period dramas like “La Chimera” and “Lee”, along with the romantic sports film “Challengers”.

What’s important to know about The History of Sound?

I, Mescal, step into the shoes of Lionel, a man captivated by David, my music student portrayed by O’Connor. Based on Ben Shattuck’s acclaimed short story, our paths cross at the Boston Conservatory in 1916. Fast forward to later years, we reconnect and embark on a quest to preserve the enchanting music deeply ingrained in Maine’s wilderness. This serendipitous encounter sets us off on a journey filled with love and the gathering of timeless melodies. Along this unforgettable ride, you’ll have the pleasure of hearing my own voice as Lionel in this period film.

This month, the debut screening of “The Evolution of Sound” takes place at the Cannes Film Festival, with MUBI handling distribution, but a cinematic release date has not been announced so far.
