Joker: Folie à Deux: How Much Money WB Lost on DC Sequel Movie Revealed

The sequel to the Joker, titled “Folie à Deux,” or more casually referred to as “Joker 2,” ended up causing Warner Bros. an approximately $150 million shortfall in their earnings.

In the year 2024, October marked the release of Joker 2 in American cinemas. Todd Phillips was once again at the helm for this follow-up to the popular 2019 Joker film, with Joaquin Phoenix returning as Arthur Fleck and Lady Gaga taking on the role of Harley “Lee” Quinzel.

The film “Folie à Deux” wasn’t successful at the box office, earning roughly $207.5 million worldwide. This is quite low compared to the first Joker movie, which brought in over a billion dollars. Additionally, it sparked controversy among both fans and critics, as evidenced by its 31% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and several Razzie Awards it won.

How much money did Warner Bros. lose on Joker: Folie à Deux?

Based on a recent report by Deadline, the debut of Joker 2 ended up causing Warner Bros. an estimated loss of about $144.25 million after expenses. Interestingly enough, this is approximately equal to the budget for the 2017 Wonder Woman movie, which had production costs totaling $149 million. However, it’s important to note that Wonder Woman was much more lucrative overall, earning around $824 million at worldwide box offices.

The financial loss of Joker 2 isn’t just due to poor ticket sales, but also because its production costs amounted to a staggering $200 million, and an additional $106.3 million was spent on advertising and distribution. Despite earning $227 million in revenue, the movie ended up costing a total of $371.3 million, resulting in a net loss of approximately $144.3 million for the studio.

Besides Phoenix, Gaga, and Joker 2’s cast, Brendan Gleeson takes on the role of Jackie Sullivan, Catherine Keener portrays Maryanne Stewart, Steve Coogan assumes the character of Paddy Meyers, Zazie Beetz is Sophie Dumond, Harry Lawtey steps into Harvey Dent, and Leigh Gill becomes Gary Puddles. The ensemble also includes other talented actors.

Joker: Folie á Deux is currently available to stream on Max.
