Day in the Life: Akwaaba World Is Championing the Global Soundscape

I’m totally immersed in Foot Locker’s vibrant Spring/Summer 2025 “Summer Different” campaign! With deep connections in the communities it serves, from the creative collective Winner’s Circle in Spain to UNDERCOVER, an underground movement based in Paris, this retail giant is partnering with a variety of grassroots groups to boost their initiatives. As a fan, I appreciate their commitment to supporting local talent and fostering creativity!

In this recent installment of our unique “Day in the Life” series featuring Foot Locker, we tag along with Milan-based Akwaaba World as they navigate an ordinary day filled with inspiration.

The term “Akwaaba,” meaning “welcome” in Twi, a language from Ghana, reflects not just the team’s origins but also their core values. Photographer and member Laurent Bentil explains to TopMob why they chose this name. This fundamental principle is embodied by the diverse and expanding membership, which they welcome each week.

Since 2018, Akwaaba World has been broadcasting online, focusing on highlighting a wide range of global music that is frequently underappreciated yet carries significant influence. These dedicated individuals are constantly delving, investigating, and gathering more material to share on their platform. On any given day, you’ll probably find them rummaging through the extensive vinyl collections at record stores like All Time Tones in the city.

Together, they expanded their horizons, drawing strength from their mutual love for football, which united them as Africans and Europeans. They decided to blend this popular sport with its significant impact on fashion trends into their creative endeavors. As Bentil puts it, “Football plays a pivotal role in Akwaaba. We spent our childhoods watching the African Cup of Nations. This experience has profoundly influenced us, not just in how we present ourselves on and off the field.

Following a visit to an indoor soccer field decorated with Akwaaba-exclusive adidas jerseys for a challenging 3v3 game, Bentil ponders over how this latest partnership symbolizes a return to his roots. “I’ve relied on Foot Locker since I was ten,” he says, discussing the retailer’s continuous role in his community as a favorite hangout spot or source of new sneakers. “Now they are supporting my team and our initiatives.
