In the upcoming A24 biopic titled “The Smashing Machine“, Dwayne Johnson experiences a significant metamorphosis, portraying UFC legend Mark Kerr.
As a gamer, I’m pumped to delve into the cinematic world directed by none other than Benny Safdie, one of the dynamic duo behind the gripping film “Uncut Gems.” This is his first solo directorial venture. Joining Johnson in this adventure is Emily Blunt who portrays Dawn Staples, Kerr’s wife on screen. We also have Bas Rutten, Lyndsey Gavin, and Oleksandr Usyk along for the ride.
Between 1997 and 2009, Kerr, a mixed martial artist, claimed four ADCC World Championship titles during his professional career. In 2022, an HBO documentary titled The Smashing Machine was produced about him. This documentary delved into his battles with substance abuse and his complicated relationships with his trainers and girlfriend. Previously, Johnson shared with Variety, “Benny aims to create and consistently pushes boundaries in terms of stories that are gritty and genuine, characters that are authentic and at times challenging. I’m at a stage in my career where I want to challenge myself in ways I haven’t before. I want to produce films with impact, ones that delve into the human condition, exploring struggle, hardship, and pain.
The Smashing Machine comes out on October 3 in theaters.
